Aaron Boone Returns for 10th Season as Yankees Manager

Aaron Boone is coming back. The Yankees manager will return for his 10th season in the dugout in 2027, a source confirmed to ESPN on Monday after the Bergen Record first reported it, ending any idea that a second straight ALDS exit would cost him the job.
Boone was already under contract for 2027. It is the final year of the two-year, $10.5 million extension he signed in February 2025, so the bigger offseason question now is whether the Yankees extend him again or let him manage in the last year of his deal.
Aaron Boone and the regular season résumé
The case for Boone has always been the regular season. He is 790-565 since the Yankees hired him out of the ESPN booth to replace Joe Girardi in December 2017, per MLB Trade Rumors. His .583 winning percentage is tied for 17th in major league history, and the Yankees have made the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons with a winning record every year.
That run has extended the Yankees' MLB record streak to 34 straight winning seasons. Boone also ranks seventh all time among Yankees managers in both wins and games managed.
The October problem is still the whole story
Here is the part Yankees fans cannot get past. The six managers ahead of Boone on that wins list all won at least one World Series. The Yankees have not won one since Girardi did it in 2009, a 17-season drought that is the second longest in franchise history.
They have now made 13 straight playoff trips without a title, tied for the fourth longest streak in postseason history. Boone's one pennant ended with a five-game loss to the Dodgers in 2024, and his teams lost ALCS matchups to Houston in 2019 and 2022.
This October hurt in a familiar way. The Yankees committed three errors in the first inning of ALDS Game 2 against the Rays, lost that night, and watched Tampa Bay finish the sweep in Game 3 at Yankee Stadium. A year earlier, Toronto knocked them out of the ALDS in four games.
"It's the worst fricking feeling in the world," Boone said after Game 3.
Aaron Judge has his manager's back
The clubhouse never wavered. Aaron Judge, who said he missed 100 games this season, went to bat for Boone right after the sweep.
"He's our manager," Judge said. "He's running the ship, especially in a season like this." He listed Giancarlo Stanton, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger among the players the Yankees had to play without. "For him to manage it the way he did and put us in the best position in the playoffs and give us an opportunity to win a World Series, he's definitely had our back. And he's our guy."
Owner Hal Steinbrenner has given no sign he is unhappy with Boone or general manager Brian Cashman. Cashman's contract runs out when the 2026 season ends, but he is expected to sign a new deal and return for a 30th season, per MLB Trade Rumors.
So the Bronx gets the same pairing again, and the Rays team that swept the Yankees out of October opens the World Series in Milwaukee on Friday. That is the bar Boone gets one more year to clear.
