Aaron Donald Nears MNF Return vs Giants

Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald is trending toward a Monday Night Football season debut against the New York Giants, with NFL Network's Ian Rapoport saying Friday the hope and belief is that Donald is out there at SoFi Stadium. Rapoport stressed it is not a lock. Donald wants to make sure he gets through the week clean after skipping the Week 1 trip to Melbourne.

Coach Sean McVay said Thursday the Rams were hopeful and that Donald would practice in full. McVay framed the call as how Donald feels more than a fixed checklist. "If he says he's ready to go, then we'll be excited to see him," McVay said, per ESPN. Rams Wire reported Donald was not listed on Thursday's injury report, which matches a full participant stamp, and that the decision sits with Donald and the medical staff through the extra day before Monday's kickoff.

Retirement exit, Melbourne skip, Week 2 window

Donald came out of retirement on Aug. 30 after two years away. He did not travel for the Rams' Netflix Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Australia. McVay noted there were not many full team-drill chances before that trip. Now the home opener under the lights is the stage everyone is watching, with the nation tuned in for Giants at Rams.

IDP managers who stashed Donald need Monday's inactive list before locking him in. The language from Rapoport and McVay is optimistic, not official. If he plays, he slides next to Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, and Poona Ford on an interior that already looks loud without him.

Giants at SoFi without Garrett

Myles Garrett is on injured reserve for at least four games after the Melbourne knee injury, so Donald's return would be the biggest defensive jolt Los Angeles can get for Week 2. Giants at Rams is set for Monday, Sept. 21, at 8:15 p.m. ET from SoFi Stadium. The Rams have only started 0-2 once since 2012 (in 2024), and another slow start would sting after the Australia loss.

Rams fans waited through the Australia reset. Friday's Rapoport update is the clearest public lean yet that No. 99 wants the home lights. Until the inactive posts, treat it as hopeful, full practice, and one more weekend of evaluation.

Buffalo and Detroit already owned Thursday night's injury board. Los Angeles owns Monday's. If Donald is active, every Giants interior blocker gets a different week of tape.
