Aaron Jones Sits Wed; Vikings Backfield Thin

Minnesota Vikings running back Aaron Jones Sr. was held out of Wednesday practice while working through a knee injury, coach Kevin O'Connell said, with backup Jordan Mason still on injured reserve and the club's Week 3 road matchup at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers already short on proven backs. O'Connell said Jones feels "pretty good" and that the staff will keep treatment going around the clock to see if his workload can rise later in the week. He gave no clear Sunday availability stamp.

That Wednesday hold is the board. Soft fantasy note only: do not invent a full-volume lock for Jones after a planned DNP. If he sits Sunday, Minnesota's active options lean on rookie Demond Claiborne plus recent signees DeeJay Dallas, Jerome Ford, and Jaret Patterson, with Ford and Patterson on the practice squad as of Wednesday and Dallas already on the 53.

Jones just ran 23 times for 105 yards in the 9-3 win over Chicago while finishing in a knee brace and taking a helmet shot that left a bruise on his cheek. One good tape does not erase a Wednesday sit. Vikings fans know how thin this room is with Mason's thumb fracture still parking him on IR.

Claiborne was inactive in Week 1 and took only two snaps in Week 2, both designed touches in space. Dallas got two carries for 8 yards against the Bears. That is not a deep committee. It is a hope that Jones' knee responds before Sunday in Tampa.

Knee brace language after a 23-carry day is the warning. A planned Wednesday hold is the follow-through. Friday's practice and the final report decide whether Minnesota can lean on Jones again or whether Claiborne and Dallas become the emergency plan on the road.

Tampa Bay will test whatever backfield Minnesota puts on the field. O'Connell's "pretty good" line is encouraging and incomplete. The Vikings need Jones' vision and contact balance on the road. If the knee keeps him in treatment instead of team periods, the emergency committee becomes the real plan, not a footnote.

Minnesota's season already leaned on Jones more than anyone wanted after Mason went down. A knee hold midweek is the cost of that usage. The Buccaneers will not care about the explanation.

Backfield board

Jones: knee. Held out Wednesday. Treatment ongoing. No Sunday lock.

Mason: IR (thumb). Still out.

Next up if Jones sits: Claiborne, Dallas, with Ford/Patterson on the PS depth.

Fan closer

Watch Friday. A Wednesday sit after a braced 105-yard day is a yellow light for Tampa, not a free pass.
