Yankees Placing Aaron Judge on Calf IL

The New York Yankees said Friday they will place captain Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right calf strain, a brutal pivot just as the club gears up for October. Field Level Media and CBS Sports both relayed the club announcement after Judge had already left Wednesday's game in Minnesota with lower-right-leg tightness that started in the first inning.

Judge told reporters he tried to play through it before reporting the issue to manager Aaron Boone. The Yankees had Thursday off and opened a series in Arizona on Friday night. A corresponding roster move comes Saturday with the IL placement.

Backdate math and October risk

Because the move can be backdated, Judge would be eligible for activation on Sept. 27, the final day of the regular season against Baltimore. The Wild Card round is expected to open Sept. 29. That calendar looks neat on paper and messy in a calf that already cost him roughly three weeks in 2020.

This is Judge's second IL trip of 2026. He missed more than three months with a rib and wrist issue, returned Sept. 8, and managed only seven games before the calf flared. In that return stretch he was 4-for-23 (.174) with one homer. On the season he sits at .241 with 18 home runs and 41 RBIs in 66 games, numbers that scream how much time he has already lost.

CBS Sports noted that if the timeline mirrors his 2020 calf strain, Judge could be looking at a mid-ALDS return only if New York advances that far. For a three-time MVP who is supposed to be the October middle of the order, that is a gut punch.

AL East chase without 99

New York (88-64) trails the Tampa Bay Rays by five games in the American League East with a four-game Yankee Stadium series against those same Rays looming next week. The club has already clinched a playoff berth, but chasing the top seed without Judge is a different animal. The Yankees are 41-25 when he starts and 47-39 when he does not.

Judge's own words after Wednesday still hang over the room: once you ramp up, things pop up. The Yankees just hope this pop is short enough that No. 99 is in the Wild Card lineup when it matters.

October without a healthy Judge is every Yankees fan's nightmare. Saturday's IL paperwork makes that nightmare official for at least the next week and a half.
