Alcaraz vs Shelton: US Open Quarterfinal Preview

Carlos Alcaraz gets his toughest Flushing test yet tonight. The defending US Open champion meets red-hot American Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals on Arthur Ashe Stadium in the Tuesday night session, per AFP via Philstar.

Alcaraz leads the head-to-head 3-0. Shelton is playing like someone who believes that streak ends under the lights tonight.

Paths to Ashe

This is also Alcaraz's first real stress test of the fortnight. Earlier rounds let him shake rust. Shelton will not gift free points if the first serve percentage dips under pressure.

Alcaraz, back for his first tournament in more than four months after a right wrist injury, has leveled up match by match. He beat Tommy Paul to reach this round. Shelton survived three four-setters before blowing past Stefanos Tsitsipas behind a huge serve night.

"To me he looks very normal (his normal, I mean)," Shelton said of Alcaraz's fitness, per AFP. He also admitted his Tsitsipas win "wasn't my AA tennis" and that beating Alcaraz will take "special tennis."

Alcaraz said his serve is still the shot that is not fully there, even with the forehand firing. Mixing returns has been how he has applied pressure so far. Shelton's lefty serve is built to punish that plan if the Spaniard's first-ball percentage dips.

Home noise, Slam context

Shelton sits inside a deep American men's group chasing the country's first Grand Slam title in 23 years. At least one U.S. man reaches the semis Tuesday because Frances Tiafoe faces Alex Michelsen in the other quarter. Alcaraz is the seven-time Slam champion trying to keep New York from turning into a homecoming story.
