Alex de Minaur Stuns Zverev to Reach Vienna Final
Alex de Minaur finally got Alexander Zverev on Saturday, cashing his third match point in a third-set tiebreak to win 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) in the Vienna semifinals at the Erste Bank Open.
This one had been a long time coming. De Minaur had lost all eight of their meetings outside team events, per Tennis Majors, and the top seed looked ready to make it nine after a lopsided second set. Instead, the Australian is into the Vienna final, and the win pushes him into the last qualifying spot for the ATP Finals in Turin.
How the Tiebreak Swung
De Minaur took the opener 6-4, then Zverev ran him off the court 6-1 in the second. The third set stayed on serve all the way, and Zverev was two points from losing at 5-6, 40-40 before he held to force the breaker.
That is where Zverev let it slip. He went to a serve-and-volley at 2-4 and missed, then missed a backhand volley that handed de Minaur four match points. De Minaur double-faulted on the first one, Zverev saved the second with a big serve, and on the third a Zverev forehand sailed long. Two hours and 30 minutes of grinding, and the steadier guy won.
The Numbers That Mattered
De Minaur won 76% of his first-serve points, and that kept him alive in a match where he faced real pressure. Zverev was almost impossible to break, saving 13 of 14 break points, and the one break de Minaur did get was enough to win him the first set.
The bigger number is in the Race to Turin. De Minaur moves to 3,210 points, one point ahead of Rafael Jodar for ninth place, which is the last ticket to Turin with Jannik Sinner out for the rest of the season. That is about as tight as a race can get, and Paris starts Monday.
Alcaraz Up Next
Now de Minaur gets Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday's final, set for 5 AM PT (8 AM ET). Alcaraz beat Daniil Medvedev in straight sets earlier Saturday to reach his first Vienna final, so this is a matchup of two guys who have both been sharp all week.
De Minaur has the indoor form, too. Tennis Majors has him 10-0 indoors this season, with a Rotterdam title in that run, and this is his fourth final of 2026. No Australian had ever reached the Vienna final before Saturday.
My Smacktok lean: back de Minaur to win at least a set against Alcaraz on Sunday. He is unbeaten indoors this year, he just survived the top seed in a third-set tiebreak, and he held serve in 10 of his 12 service games against one of the best servers on tour.
