Ovechkin Day-to-Day, May Skip Preseason

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin is day to day with a lower-body injury and may not play again in the preseason, coach Spencer Carbery said as the NHL Status Report flagged the 41-year-old's availability less than two weeks before Opening Night. Ovechkin missed Washington's preseason opener against Boston and sat out consecutive practices, including work with the non-game group, per the club and AP.
Carbery would not lock a return for the two remaining exhibition games, at home against the Bruins on Friday and at Philadelphia on Saturday. He pointed to an off day and two practice days ahead before offering a clearer timeline on when Ovechkin plays and how many preseason reps he still needs. The Capitals open the regular season Oct 2 at Carolina.
Context for fans: Ovechkin is entering his 22nd NHL season after playing all 82 games in 2025-26 with 32 goals and 32 assists. A soft lower-body tag in late September is not an October panic button by itself, but skipping the rest of preseason would mean the first real game action arrives on Opening Night. That is a different ramp than a full exhibition run next to Dylan Strome and Ryan Leonard, the camp line Carbery had been rolling.
Soft fantasy note only: keep Ovechkin rostered for draft season, and treat the preseason snub as a maintenance board until Washington posts a skate or game designation. Do not invent a long-term absence from day-to-day language alone.
The next honest update lands after those two practice days. Until then, circle Oct 2 in Raleigh as the first must-watch availability checkpoint.

Preseason reps are optional. Opening Night availability is the real card.
