Alexander Zverev Outlasts Bublik to Reach Shanghai QFs
By Smacktok

Alexander Zverev had to grind for this one. The top seed saved four set points, fought through an ankle problem and then blew Alexander Bublik away in a final tiebreak to win 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1) on Tuesday and reach the Rolex Shanghai Masters quarterfinals for the first time since 2019.
It took two hours and 41 minutes, and it was Zverev's 40th career Masters 1000 quarterfinal. He is chasing his eighth title at that level and his first in Shanghai.
Four set points, then a volley
The first set was a serve-fest, and Bublik had chances to grab it. His first set point came with Zverev serving at 5-6, but the Kazakh pulled out of a forehand and dumped it into the net. In the tiebreak he led 6/3, then threw in two loose drop shots and sprayed a forehand wide. Zverev closed it on his first set point with a volley.
That is a brutal way to lose a set, and plenty of players fold right there. Bublik did not.
The ankle scare
Bublik cleaned up his game in the second set, cutting his baseline errors to eight, and became just the second player to break Zverev's serve all tournament when the German sent a backhand wide. Zverev was clearly hurting, grabbing at his right ankle several times.
"My ankle was acting up, unfortunately," Zverev said afterward. "It was kind of understandable because I have been playing a lot of tennis, which is kind of a good sign because I have been playing well. I am starting to feel my body more and more but I am happy to get through. It was a difficult match because he has been playing amazing tennis."
In the third set Zverev fell behind a break, clawed it back, and then ran away with the tiebreak 7-1. He finished it with an ace, fitting for a day when both men were bombing serves. The win trims his head-to-head deficit against Bublik to 2-3.
De Minaur up next
This was Zverev's first match since he clinched the ATP year-end No. 1 ranking for the first time on Monday. Zverev, who has won two majors in 2026, will become the 30th man to reach No. 1, with Nov. 2 the earliest that can happen, while Jannik Sinner sits out the rest of 2026 with a knee injury.
Next up is Alex de Minaur, who has not dropped a set in Shanghai after beating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4. The Australian reached the Beijing final last week and is fighting for the last Turin qualifying spot, so he will bring plenty of legs and urgency.
If Zverev's ankle holds up, the world No. 1 in waiting gets a real test, and tennis fans get a quarterfinal worth staying up for.
