Alexander Zverev Routs Arthur Fery to Reach Vienna Semis

Alexander Zverev needed only 58 minutes on Friday to beat Arthur Fery 6-0, 6-2 and reach the Vienna semis at the Erste Bank Open. For a guy who already knows he will be world No. 1 on Monday, it looked a lot like a victory lap.

Zverev locked up the top spot on Thursday with his straight-sets win over Tallon Griekspoor, and the new PIF ATP Rankings drop on Monday, November 2. He becomes just the second German man to reach No. 1, after Boris Becker in 1991. Now he wants a trophy to go with it, in the building where he won the title in 2021.

Fery Never Really Got Going

This one was over early. Fery needed treatment from the physio late in his upset of Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday, and he looked physically limited from the very first game against Zverev. The German saw it and pounced, piling up break chances and barely losing a point behind his own serve.

BBC Sport had Zverev dropping only six points on serve all match while converting five of his nine break points. It was a rematch of their Wimbledon semifinal this summer, which Zverev also won in straight sets, and he is now 2-0 against the British No. 1.

Zverev went out of his way to pump Fery up afterward. "I know the score was 6-0, 6-2, but he should not put himself down too much," he said. "It is his first year on the Tour and he is doing amazing things."

The Numbers That Matter

  • 65-14 season record after Friday

  • 12th semifinal of 2026, the most on tour

  • 2 Grand Slam titles this year, at the French Open and the US Open

A Week That Almost Went Sideways

It is easy to forget how close this Vienna run came to ending on day one. Zverev had to save four match points to get past Martin Landaluce in his opener, and he dropped a set doing it. Since then he has not dropped one, handling Griekspoor and now Fery without much stress.

That is the version of Zverev that has taken over the sport this season, with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz both missing time with injuries. He had already clinched the year-end No. 1 spot for 2026. Monday makes him No. 1 right now, too.

Next up is a Saturday semifinal against the winner of Alex de Minaur and Matteo Berrettini, with Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev playing the other semi. A Zverev and Alcaraz final would be a pretty good way to open his first week at No. 1.

My Smacktok lean for Saturday: Zverev to win his semifinal. He has not dropped a set since the Landaluce scare, and he gave up only six points on serve on Friday.
