Bianca Andreescu is out of US Open qualifying after Tamara Zidansek beat the 2019 champion 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday in New York. The WTA said Andreescu led by a set and 3-1, then took a medical timeout trailing 4-3 in the second. Her movement was clearly off after that. The match lasted 2 hours, 44 minutes.

Zidansek, 28 and ranked No. 146, improved to 2-0 against Andreescu. Their only previous meeting was a 3-hour, 20-minute first-round slog at Roland Garros in 2021 (6-7(1), 7-6(2), 9-7) that launched Zidansek to the French Open semifinals. Friday puts her into her first US Open main draw since 2022. She plays Maria Timofeeva in round one.

How did Bianca Andreescu lose?

She won the first set 6-2, led 3-1 in the second, and still lost. That is the sourced sequence. The WTA said the medical timeout came at 4-3 in the second, and that Andreescu still ripped a running backhand pass late in the third. It was not enough. Zidansek used the forehand to spread the court and closed 6-4.

Andreescu was one of two former top-five names in Friday's qualifying last round. Zheng Qinwen got through. Andreescu did not. A 2019 title in this building does not punch a 2026 main-draw ticket. Qualifying is three matches, and she came up one short.

What is next for Andreescu and Zidansek?

This was Andreescu's shot to walk back into the building she won in 2019 without a wild card. Qualifying is unforgiving that way. One medical timeout and a lost second set, and the main draw moves on without her. Zidansek had not beaten a name that big in New York since that Paris run five years ago.

Zidansek is in the main draw. Andreescu is done in singles for this US Open unless she appears in doubles. Fans searching Andreescu US Open or Andreescu qualifying want the result, not a soft "fell short." The result is a three-set loss from a set up.

Elsewhere Friday, Zheng Qinwen qualified and Venus Williams drew Sofia Kenin in the main draw. Grigor Dimitrov already came through men's qualifying. Opening day is Sunday. Andreescu will not be on Ashe. Zidansek will be on the grounds.
