Andreeva Beats Tjen at US Open

Mirra Andreeva beat Janice Tjen 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the 2026 US Open on Tuesday, closing the day session on Louis Armstrong Stadium. The No. 5 seed needed a rematch 14 days after Cincinnati, and this time there was no second-set stress.

In Ohio it was 6-1, 7-6(5). In New York it was straight and short. Andreeva never faced a break point. She converted all four she saw. That is how you book a fourth straight US Open second round. The Cincinnati opener took longer because Tjen found the forehand in set two. Armstrong never gave her that window.

Serve numbers that settled it

The WTA had Andreeva landing 80 percent of first serves (33 of 41) and winning 85 percent of those points (28 of 33). She took 52 percent of return points (25 of 48). Tjen saved zero of four break points and won only 20 percent of return points.

In the first set Andreeva won seven of eight points at the net and piled up six winners while closing on a 12-point run. She led 5-2 after a love break, then held at love. The second set never turned into Cincinnati Part Two.

What she said after

"Our match in Cincinnati was really tough," Andreeva said on court. "It was hot and humid, and it was the first time I was playing against her." She added that she talked with her coach about being more aggressive. "Today was a better match."

Tjen's forehand had made the Cincinnati second set messy. Tuesday it never got that far. Andreeva stayed on the front foot and kept the Armstrong closer from turning into a grind. In Cincinnati she saved her only break point. In New York she faced none. That is the difference between surviving a rematch and owning it.

Side-by-side with Cincinnati, the New York numbers jumped: first-serve percentage from 58 to 80, break points converted from three of ten to four of four, return points from 42.5 percent to 52. Tjen's return points fell from 27 percent to 20. Andreeva's day session finish was quieter than the night session and just as decisive. Two meetings with Tjen in two weeks, two straight-set wins, cleaner numbers, and a second-round date already on the board.
