Arozarena Homers as Mariners Beat Red Sox

Randy Arozarena hit a three-run homer and the Seattle Mariners ended a five-game skid with a 9-6 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night at Fenway Park, per ESPN and the Associated Press. Dominic Canzone also went deep, and Seattle finished with 14 hits after tagging Jedixson Páez for five runs in the second inning of the rookie's first big-league start.

The night also belonged to a September call-up. Cuban 21-year-old Lazaro Montes, wearing No. 99 as the designated hitter, homered in his MLB debut and drove in two as Seattle built a 9-1 cushion before Boston clawed back late with a pair of homers that never fully erased the early damage.

Montes' debut bang

Per the Seattle Times, Montes walked and scored during the Mariners' five-run second, ripped an RBI single in the third off Páez on an 0-2 curveball to score Josh Naylor, then crushed a Wyatt Olds slider 106 mph to center for a 407-foot solo shot in the fifth, per AP. He finished with two hits, two RBI, and a walk, becoming the first Mariner with a multi-hit debut since Ichiro in 2001. Montes had mashed 38 homers between Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma this year before the roster expansion add, and he signed the Green Monster before first pitch.

"I feel like I made it. I made it. That feels amazing, man," Montes said beforehand, per the Seattle Times, after an emotional call to his parents in Miami when the call-up news landed.

Skid snapped at Fenway

Bryan Woo (10-9) worked six strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts. Páez (0-1) lasted 3 2/3 and gave up eight runs on 10 hits. Boston got homers from Mickey Gasper and Jahmai Jones but could not erase the early hole after falling behind 9-1. Arozarena's three-run blast was the middle of that Fenway statement after five straight losses.

The series wraps Wednesday with Bryce Miller (4-8, 4.12) against Patrick Sandoval (1-3, 4.20). Arozarena's bat and Montes' first big-league swing gave Seattle the kind of road win that resets a September skid before it hardens into something worse.
