Arthur Gea Upsets Ben Shelton in Shanghai Third Round
By Smacktok

Arthur Gea just took down Ben Shelton. The 21-year-old Frenchman beat the third-seeded American 7-6(5), 7-6(3) in the third round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday for the first Top 10 win of his career, per the ATP Tour.
This is Gea's first time ever in the main draw of a Masters 1000 event, and now he is into the fourth round. Shelton, the world No. 4 and the US Open runner-up last month, is out early in an event he needed for his push toward the ATP Finals.
Two tiebreaks, zero panic
Gea had chances to make this easier and did not take them, which makes the finish even better. He was serving for the first set at 5-4 and got broken, then regrouped and won the tiebreak, per the ATP. In the second set Shelton broke him at 3-3, and Gea recovered the break before closing out another calm tiebreak. The whole thing took two hours and seven minutes.
The key was how he handled Shelton's big lefty serve. Gea neutralized the first serve and kept coming forward, winning 20 of 28 points at the net, per Infosys ATP Stats.
"It has been an incredible few weeks," Gea said. "I changed my game a lot. I am more confident on the court. It has been a really good year at the moment. I hope it keeps going."
Gea's breakout year keeps rolling
If you have not been following him, Gea started 2026 ranked No. 241 in the world. He won his first ATP title in Los Cabos in July, then made the fourth round of the US Open as a lucky loser before losing a five-setter to Botic van de Zandschulp. This win moves him up nine spots to No. 48 in the live rankings, per the ATP.
Next up is another big hitter. Gea plays No. 13 seed Jakub Mensik in the fourth round after Mensik beat Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 on Sunday.
A rough return for Shelton
Shelton was playing for the first time since the Davis Cup in September. He had pulled out of the ATP 500 event in Tokyo with a shoulder injury, so this was always a bit of a question mark. He has still won four titles this season and sits fourth in the live Race to Turin, aiming to qualify for the ATP Finals for a second straight year.
For American fans that hurts, especially with a deep Shanghai run on the table. For Gea, it is the best win of his life, and with the way he is moving forward and handling pressure, Mensik is going to have his hands full.
