Panthers Work Out Ekeler After Brooks Blow

Carolina Panthers running back depth just got louder. Free agent Austin Ekeler is working out for the club Wednesday as Jonathon Brooks prepares for core muscle surgery and an injured-reserve stay of at least six weeks, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and multiple league sources confirming Aaron Wilson's report. That is a same-day roster reaction, not a slow waiver wire thought experiment. Brooks left Sunday's win at Atlanta in the fourth quarter with a groin issue that medical follow-ups pushed into surgery.
Ekeler, 31, has not played since tearing his Achilles with the Washington Commanders in September 2025. Before that, he was a dual-threat staple with the Chargers, peaking across 2021 and 2022 with huge scrimmage and touchdown totals. Carolina already leans on Chuba Hubbard as the lead back, with AJ Dillon as the change-of-pace piece on the 53. Practice-squad names like Anthony Tyus III and Ahmani Marshall sit behind them. A healthy Ekeler audition is about receiving chops next to Bryce Young, not crowning a new feature back overnight.
Brooks' path remains the bigger medical story under the hood. The 2024 second-round pick returned this season after back-to-back ACL surgeries and managed 30 rush yards on nine carries plus 43 receiving yards on two catches in two games. Best case with a Week 5 bye, Rapoport's six-week floor still costs him a chunk of the middle of the schedule. Soft fantasy note only: keep Hubbard elevated while Brooks sits, and treat any Ekeler signing as speculative until Carolina posts a deal.
The timing matters for a Panthers team that just beat Atlanta and wants the ground game to stay versatile. Hubbard already has 102 rushing yards and a touchdown plus five catches for 49 yards and two scores through two weeks, per ESPN's accounting of the early workload. Dillon is the veteran changeup. Ekeler would be the pass-game specialist if the physical checks clear after last year's Achilles.
Carolina fans have watched Brooks' availability flip since training camp groin soreness, a Week 1 clear, and then another soft-tissue exit in Atlanta. Surgery plus IR is the club saying this is not a two-week rest. The Ekeler workout is the first concrete outside add on that board.
Nothing is signed yet. Workouts become contracts only when both sides like the medicals and the money. Until then, Hubbard remains the Week 3 plan and Brooks remains a midseason hope rather than a weekly lineup lock.

Watch whether Carolina actually signs Ekeler. The tryout alone already says Brooks is not a short absence.
