Ben Shelton Beats Norrie to Reach Paris Round of 16
Ben Shelton didn't waste any time in Paris. The third seed beat Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4 in his opening match at the Paris Masters on Tuesday night, needing just 71 minutes on Court Central to book a spot in the round of 16.
It's a quiet kind of statement from a guy who's already locked into the ATP Finals in Turin. Shelton didn't need this week for points. He wanted it anyway, and he got a little payback too. Norrie beat him in Cincinnati in their only other meeting, and Norrie's no easy draw indoors. He's the guy who knocked Carlos Alcaraz out of this event in the second round last year.
Shelton Got His Revenge
Shelton was honest about that Cincinnati loss after the match. "First of all, he's a great player," he said on court, per Tennis Majors. "He killed me last time we played in Cincinnati."
This time it was Shelton dictating from start to finish. That's the version of Shelton that won a career-best four titles in 2026 and made his first major final at the U.S. Open, where he lost to Alexander Zverev.
He also sounds like he's having fun. "I think the French crowd has some of the best energy in tennis," Shelton said. "So for me it's a pleasure every match that I get to play here." And he added the line that should worry the rest of the tour: "Tennis is a game that you have to continue to improve or you fall behind."
That's not just talk. Over the weekend Shelton announced that Juan Carlos Ferrero, who coached Alcaraz to his first six major titles, is joining his staff for 2027 alongside his father, Bryan. Ferrero called him a player with "extraordinary talent, power and character."
Fritz Had to Dig Out of a Hole
Taylor Fritz had a tougher Tuesday. The 11th seed dropped the first set to French qualifier Benjamin Bonzi before rallying to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour and 42 minutes. Bonzi, ranked No. 95, had the home crowd behind him and made Fritz earn every game.
Fritz can't afford many slips this week. He came into Paris 12th in the Race to Turin, and Tennis Majors reports he needs at least a semifinal run to stay in contention. Only the title would lock up his spot. Slovak qualifier Alex Molcan is next, and a possible third-round date with sixth seed Arthur Fils, another Turin hopeful, is waiting after that.
What's Next for Shelton
Shelton will face the winner of Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci and Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech on Wednesday. If it's Rinderknech, expect a loud building. Shelton says that's exactly how he likes it.
The Smacktok lean: Shelton just beat the only guy who'd ever beaten him in this matchup, in straight sets, and Turin's already locked up so he's playing loose. Don't overthink it. We're riding Shelton into the quarterfinals.
