Shelton Beats Paul to Reach Paris Semis
By Smacktok
•

Ben Shelton fired 19 aces and outlasted Tommy Paul 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Friday at the Rolex Paris Masters to reach his first Masters 1000 semi-final outside his two Canada title runs. The American lefty converted two of four break points in a hard-earned one-hour, 46-minute win on Court Central at Paris La Defense Arena.
The result ended Paul's Nitto ATP Finals hopes and locked Frances Tiafoe into Turin alongside Shelton, who was already qualified. Taylor Fritz can still claim the last American spot by beating Carlos Alcaraz in Friday night's quarter-final.
Serving Contest, Then the Reset
Shelton called the first set a serving contest and said he got a little lucky when Paul double-faulted twice on the break. Paul broke early in the second and looked like the frontrunner he usually is. Shelton's first hold after that break was huge, and he took the set-deciding break by playing offensive tennis on his terms before serving it out.
The third set belonged to the big lefty. Nineteen aces and clean serving under scoreboard pressure closed the door. Shelton is the first American into the Paris last four since Jack Sock and John Isner both reached that stage in 2017.
Turin Math Gets Clearer
Shelton sits fourth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin and has already punched his ticket. Paul's elimination clears the path for eighth-placed Tiafoe, one of Shelton's best friends, to make Turin for the first time. Fritz still has a shot at the final spot if he can take out Alcaraz in the night session.
"Frances has had an outstanding year," Shelton said. "To see him make Turin for the first time is amazing." Three Americans in the mix for the season finale is the kind of depth U.S. tennis has been chasing for years.
Semis Await Van Assche or Hijikata
Shelton will face the winner of Luca Van Assche and Rinky Hijikata, whose quarter-final was still live when this match finished. Home favourite Van Assche or qualifier Hijikata, either way it is a first Masters semi-final outside Canada for the 24-year-old lefty.
Smacktok pick lean: Lean higher on Shelton's aces. Nineteen in a three-set quarter-final is the weapon that travels into a Paris semi, especially indoors where that lefty serve jumps.
Paul's Turin run is over. Shelton's Paris run is just getting started, and the American wave into Turin got a lot louder on Friday afternoon.
