Shelton Beats Rinderknech to Reach Paris Masters QF

Ben Shelton clawed out of a set hole and a mini-break deficit in the decider, then closed Arthur Rinderknech 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to reach the Paris Masters quarterfinals for a second straight year. The third seed needed 2 hours and 5 minutes on Court Central on Thursday, winning five of the final six tiebreak points from 2-4 and booking an all-American quarterfinal against Tommy Paul.
It is Shelton's eighth ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal and his second of the season after Montreal. The win was also his 43rd tour-level victory of 2026, a new personal best after 42 wins in 2024, and he remains the first American into back-to-back Paris last eights since Jack Sock.
Tiebreak Calm After the Mini-Break
Rinderknech took the first set in 27 minutes, broke for 4-2, and won all eight of his net points early. Shelton leveled by breaking in the last game of the second set at 5-4, a set where he made only one unforced error. Neither man dropped serve in the deciding set. Rinderknech saved break points at 2-2 and 3-3 before the breaker.
In the tiebreak the Frenchman led 4-2 with a mini-break. Shelton won the next point on Rinderknech's serve, held his own for 5-4, then took another return point at 5-5 to earn match point and converted on his serve. Both hit 16 aces. Rinderknech finished with 41 winners and 31 unforced errors. Shelton had 38 winners and just 13 errors, per Tennis Majors.
Revenge From Queen's, Path to Paul
"I thought it was pretty clinical other than the one game I dropped on serve in the second set," Shelton told Tennis Channel. "I was happy with the resilience." He also called the closing stretch calm. "I hadn't missed a first serve in the breaker and I was hitting spots," he said. "Today there was kind of a calmness about me in those final moments."
The win avenged Rinderknech's 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) win over Shelton at Queen's in 2025, their only prior meeting. Rinderknech had beaten Francisco Cerundolo and Mattia Bellucci earlier in the week and was chasing a second Masters quarterfinal after last year's Shanghai final. He is 0-7 against top-10 players in 2026.
All-American Quarterfinal
Paul beat Quentin Halys 7-6 (3), 6-4 earlier Thursday. Shelton and Paul are split 2-2 in their head-to-head. Shelton won at the 2023 US Open and in Tokyo that year. Paul took the most recent meeting, 6-2, 6-4 in the 2024 Dallas semifinals. Shelton is already Turin-qualified. Paul is still chasing the Nitto ATP Finals cut and needs every Race point he can find.
"It's been a long time since we've been on the court, but I'm looking forward to it," Shelton said of Paul. "He's in great form right now. A great player, a great friend. It will be fireworks tomorrow."
Smacktok pick lean: Lean higher on Shelton's first-serve points won. He closed the breaker without missing a first serve and kept the unforced-error count at 13 against a home favorite.
An all-American Paris quarterfinal with Turin math on the line is exactly the Friday night this draw needed.
