Ben Shelton Stunned by No. 222 Jerome Kym in Basel
Ben Shelton got taken down by a home-country wild card in Basel. The top seed and world No. 4 lost to 222nd-ranked Swiss wild card Jerome Kym 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (1) in Thursday's night session at the Swiss Indoors, with Kym closing it out with a full-stretch backhand pass running toward the net.
That is a massive swing for this tournament. Shelton came in chasing his eighth career title, and on the same day Novak Djokovic went out to Jan-Lennard Struff, the draw lost its top seed too. Kym, a 23-year-old from Rheinfelden, moves on to the quarterfinals as the first Swiss man to get that far in Basel since Dominic Stricker in 2023.
How Kym Pulled It Off
Kym served like a guy who belonged. He hit 19 aces to Shelton's 17 and won 76 percent of his first-serve points, and he had never beaten a top-30 player before Thursday.
It was not clean. Shelton escaped with big aces when he was two points from defeat late in the second set, then won that tiebreak. In the third, Kym led 5-2 with two breaks, got broken at 5-2 and again at 5-4, and suddenly it was slipping away. Then he held at love for 6-6 and ran away with the tiebreak 7-1. The match finished after midnight local time, 2 hours and 20 minutes after it started.
For Kym, who typically only plays main draws at events in Switzerland, it is easily the biggest win of his career.
A Rough Pattern for Shelton
This is the part Shelton fans will not love. The U.S. Open finalist now has three losses this season to players ranked in triple digits: Kym at 222, Otto Virtanen at 140 at Wimbledon, and Nikoloz Basilashvili at 117 in Rome. He also lost to seven more opponents ranked between 56 and 87.
The flip side is that he has won four titles this year on three different surfaces, so the ceiling is obviously there. He showed it in the first round in Basel, too, beating Aleksandar Kovacevic in three tiebreak-heavy sets. The issue is the floor, and indoor hard courts with a fast serve on the other side of the net keep exposing it.
What Is Next in Basel
Kym faces eighth seed Jiri Lehecka in Friday's quarterfinals after Lehecka beat Daniel Altmaier 7-5, 6-4. The other side of the bracket has second seed Arthur Fils against sixth seed Taylor Fritz, plus Struff against Nuno Borges, so there is still plenty of star power left even with Shelton and Djokovic gone.
Smacktok Pick Lean
We lean higher on Kym's aces against Lehecka. He just fired 19 aces past the world No. 4, he held 14 of 16 service games, and he is playing in front of a home crowd that will be louder Friday than it was at midnight. Ride the serve until somebody proves they can break it.
