Bosa Plays Week 1 vs Rams in Australia

Nick Bosa is playing Week 1. Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris left no doubt in Melbourne that the All-Pro edge will face the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday night Pacific time (Friday morning in Australia), per ESPN, USA Today, and NBC Sports Bay Area.

That stamps the 49ers' biggest defensive question mark for the international opener. Snap count is still TBD. Availability is not. That alone changes the Week 1 script for both sidelines.

Morris: he's going

Week 1 in Australia already carried enough noise without an unclear edge. Confirming Bosa lets the 49ers stop whispering and start scripting how often he rushes in obvious passing downs versus how often they spell him to protect the knee.

"Oh, he's going out there," Morris said, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "Whatever you want to say, he's going. We're not hiding that." NBC Sports Bay Area captured the same tone: "Nick Bosa, he's going out there... He will be there."

Bosa tore his right ACL in Week 3 last season. He opened camp in individual drills, then lost time to tendinitis and soreness. He returned to practice Sept. 2 before the Australia trip and told reporters he felt a breakthrough, so long as nothing slipped. After skipping Monday's session in Melbourne, he was back on the field for Tuesday's longer padded practice.

Morris still will not promise a full workload. He will promise involvement. "Nick's a pro at everything he does," Morris said. "The ultimate pro."

MCG stakes vs the Rams

San Francisco opens against a division rival on the other side of the world. Having Bosa active changes how the Rams have to protect the edge and how often Shanahan's defense can chase the quarterback without living in nickel packages.

Earlier coverage already tracked the practice breakthrough before the flight. Tuesday's comments close the loop from "trending" to "playing." How many snaps he eats remains a game-day call. The jersey is going on.

The Rams arrive as the early NFC West measuring stick. Aaron Donald's own Week 1 status has been its own subplot, but San Francisco cannot control that room. It can control whether Bosa lines up. Morris answered that. The rest is snap management, pass-rush rotations, and whether the tendinitis stays quiet after the long flight.

For a club that spent months managing the ACL calendar, that is the update fans needed before kickoff Down Under.
