Brad Marchand Out Through October Rehab

Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand is expected to miss the first month of the season while rehabbing from undisclosed August surgery, coach Paul Maurice said as camp opened, which means the 38-year-old is sidelined for at least Florida's first 14 games. Sportsnet and ESPN both carried Maurice's line: take October for rehab, maybe ready at the end of the month, maybe a short extra stretch if there are no setbacks.

Marchand revealed the surgery in mid-August without releasing details. He missed a career-high 30 games last season with a lower-body issue and still produced 27 goals and 27 assists in 52 games before Florida shut him down in early March. The Panthers open the regular season Sept. 29 against Carolina, so an October rehab stamp is a real early-season hole on a roster still chasing Cup form.

What camp actually showed

Marchand was on the ice Thursday but not in either of Florida's two main camp sessions. He worked separately with forward Jonah Gadjovich, who remains out indefinitely after neck surgery limited him to 10 games last season. Maurice said the club is still searching for answers on Gadjovich and will list him out indefinitely even though he is skating.

Smacktok fans should treat Marchand as a named absence into late October, not a day-to-day camp tweak. Inventing a return date earlier than Maurice's October window would be guessing. Until Florida posts a firmer medical, the board is rehab through October and a first-month scratch.

Last winter already showed how quickly Florida's depth chart can thin when Marchand and other regulars sit. Opening without him for a full month puts more heat on the remaining top-six wings and on whoever inherits his minutes on the power play out of the gate.

Early-season gap

Florida's depth chart without Marchand puts more heat on the remaining top-six wings out of the gate. Camp is still early, but the October rehab plan is the firmest public update yet on a player who already lost big chunks of last winter.

August surgery. October rehab. Fourteen games minimum. That is the Marchand board as camp rolls.
