Nuggets Emerge as Cam Whitmore Suitor

The Denver Nuggets have emerged as a team to watch for free agent forward Cam Whitmore, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported, after Cleveland waived the former lottery pick to finish its offseason roster moves. Whitmore still collects his fully guaranteed $5.46 million Cavaliers salary for 2026-27, so opportunity can matter more than another payday.

Whitmore, the 20th overall pick in 2023, moved from Houston to Washington, then to Cleveland as a piece in last month's multi-team trade that sent Peyton Watson to the Cavs. Cleveland cut him in a cost-cutting step ahead of camp. Hoops Rumors and Hoops Wire amplified Stein's note that Denver is in the mix.

Roster math and the luxury tax

Denver currently carries 14 players on standard contracts, so a 15th standard spot is open on paper. The Nuggets also have a two-way slot available alongside KJ Simpson and Bryce Hopkins, and Whitmore has one season of two-way eligibility left. The catch is tax: Denver is already deep into luxury-tax territory, so even a minimum signing can cost far more than the salary line suggests.

If the Nuggets want a full 15-man group, Whitmore could compete with Lonnie Walker IV for that last standard spot. A two-way deal would be cheaper and still give him a path to prove the shoulder blood clot that ended his Wizards season is behind him.

Whitmore averaged 10.8 points in 17.4 minutes across his first two Rockets seasons, then 9.2 points in 21 games for Washington last year before the clot shut him down. The talent that made him a first-rounder has not disappeared. The question is fit, health, and whether Denver wants to pay the tax bill.

What Nuggets fans should watch

Camp opens soon. Watch whether Denver adds a wing before tip-off or sits on 14 standard deals. Whitmore needs minutes and a clean bill of health more than another empty roster stamp. Denver needs cheap scoring after losing bench punch in the Watson deal and Tim Hardaway Jr.'s exit.

This is interest, not a signed deal. Stein's reporting puts the Nuggets on the board. The next move is Denver's front office deciding if the tax math is worth a 22-year-old flyer.
