Alcaraz Beats Fritz to Reach Paris Semis
By Smacktok
•

Carlos Alcaraz saved two match points and beat Taylor Fritz 6-7(10), 7-5, 6-3 on Friday night at the Rolex Paris Masters to reach his first Paris semi-final. The second seed closed it in 2 hours and 45 minutes on Court Central at Paris La Defense Arena after trailing a set and 3-5 in the second, then flipping the match when Fritz could not finish.
The win also locked Turin. Fritz would have qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals with a victory. Instead Rafael Jodar claimed the eighth and final spot, and the field is set: Alexander Zverev, Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli, Arthur Fils, Frances Tiafoe, and Jodar for Nov. 15-22 in Turin.
Match Points at 3-5 and on Fritz Serve
Fritz took the opener in a long tie-break after saving three set points and converting his third chance when Alcaraz pushed a forehand wide. In the second, Fritz looked ready to close at 5-3. Alcaraz saved the first match point on his own serve with a forehand that sent Fritz the wrong way, then held with a backhand drop. On Fritz's serve he faced another match point and ripped a crosscourt forehand pass to stay alive.
From 5-5 Alcaraz took the next two games and forced a third. The H2H now sits at 7-1 for Alcaraz, and the crowd that stood up during that 3-5 hold never really sat back down.
Third-Set Climb, First Paris Semi
Alcaraz cleaned up the baseline errors in the decider and kept pressing while Fritz tightened. The Spaniard is into his third Masters 1000 semi-final of the season and his first in Paris, the first Spaniard there since Rafael Nadal in 2020. He has won seven straight matches after lifting the Vienna title last week.
Next up is Casper Ruud or Nuno Borges in the other half of the draw. That quarter-final was still unfinished when Alcaraz walked off Court Central, so the Saturday semi-final opponent stays TBD until that match is over.
Turin Locked Behind the Win
For Fritz the night ends 11th in the live Race to Turin after a near-miss that would have been a fourth Finals berth. For Jodar it is a career-defining qualification without needing another result. For Alcaraz it is another late-night rescue and a clear path into the Paris weekend.
Smacktok pick lean: Lean higher on Alcaraz first-serve points won in the Paris semi. Saving two match points and owning the third set is the usage that shows up when he gets first strikes indoors.
Two match points gone, first Paris semi booked, Turin math settled. That is an Alcaraz Friday night.
