Carlos Alcaraz Beats Tommy Paul to Reach Vienna Semis

Carlos Alcaraz broke Tommy Paul once in the first set, then ran away with the tiebreak in the second, winning 6-4, 7-6(2) on Friday to reach the Vienna semis at the Erste Bank Open. He saved all five break points he faced in a match that ran one hour and 50 minutes.

The prize is a Saturday semifinal against Daniil Medvedev, the hottest hard-court player on tour right now, with a spot in the Vienna final on the line. Alcaraz is the No. 2 seed this week behind Alexander Zverev and sits No. 3 in the rankings.

How He Got It Done

This was a fun one to watch, with long rallies and a lot of shotmaking from both guys. The only break of the match came in the seventh game of the first set, when Alcaraz got Paul at 3-3 and then served it out. In the second set, Paul had the only two break point chances and Alcaraz shut both of them down.

The tiebreak was where the gap showed. Alcaraz took it 7-2, and Paul's day ended with 28 unforced errors against 19 winners, per Tennis Temple. Alcaraz admitted he was not at his sharpest from the baseline. "I think I played great tennis, probably without quite as much confidence as yesterday," he said. "But, overall, I'm very satisfied with the battle."

He also had nothing but love for his opponent. "I'm a big fan of Tommy, honestly. I love his style, the way he plays," Alcaraz said.

The Numbers That Matter

  • 24 straight wins at ATP 500 events, including a 14-0 run this season

  • 5 of 5 break points saved on Friday

  • 8-2 career record against Paul, with seven straight wins

The win is also the 50th tour-level semifinal of his career, and he is still only 23. His first trip to the Vienna semis came back in 2021, when he debuted at this event.

Medvedev Is the Real Test

Saturday gets a lot harder. Medvedev beat Adrian Mannarino earlier Friday to reach the semis and clinch his spot at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. He is on a seven-match winning streak after winning the Almaty title last Sunday, and Tennis Majors has him leading the tour with 41 hard-court wins this season.

Alcaraz owns a 6-3 edge in their head-to-head, but Medvedev won the only meeting so far in 2026, in the Indian Wells semifinals. Alcaraz has been tested all week, too. He went to a tiebreak in the second set of every match in Vienna, against Karen Khachanov, Nikoloz Basilashvili and now Paul.

My Smacktok lean for Saturday: Alcaraz to keep his ATP 500 streak alive. He is 14-0 at that level this season and did not lose serve once against Paul.
