Casper Ruud Beats Jodar to Reach Paris Round of 16
Casper Ruud just crashed Rafael Jodar's first week in the top 10. The Norwegian beat the ninth seed 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday night at the Paris Masters, needing only 78 minutes to reach the round of 16.
That result didn't just move Ruud along. It shook up the race for Turin. Ruud's win locked Flavio Cobolli into the ATP Finals, and it left Jodar hanging onto the last qualifying spot with a pack of players still alive in Paris and coming for it.
Ruud Got His Shanghai Payback
Jodar beat Ruud earlier this year in Shanghai, and the 20-year-old Spaniard came into this one riding a run to the Shanghai final and a brand-new top-10 ranking. None of that mattered once the match started. Ruud jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, and when Jodar went up 3-0 in the second, Ruud reeled off the next six games to close it out.
The former world No. 2 played on the front foot all night, and he said that's the whole plan indoors. "On the indoor court you have to be as aggressive as possible," Ruud said, per the ATP. "There will be some mistakes. [But] I have accepted that in my game plan for indoor hard courts."
The numbers back that up. Here's what decided it:
7 aces for Ruud to Jodar's 3
82% of second-serve points won by Ruud (9 of 11)
Just 2 of 11 points won by Jodar on Ruud's second serve
Jodar didn't make excuses. He told reporters Ruud played better and said he'd have to learn from his mistakes, and he admitted he hasn't decided what's next after a long season.
What It Means for Turin
Cobolli, who pulled out of Paris with a left leg injury, needed Jodar to lose to clinch his spot. Now he's in, and only three places are left for the season finale, which runs Nov. 15-22 in Turin.
Jodar sits ninth in the live race with 3,234 points, which is effectively the final qualifying place with Jannik Sinner out injured. That's a thin cushion. Alex de Minaur is right behind him at 3,170 and passes him with a win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Wednesday. Novak Djokovic (2,940), Taylor Fritz (2,900) and Tommy Paul (2,775) are all still in the draw too.
What's Next for Ruud
Ruud gets the winner of Jan-Lennard Struff and Thiago Agustin Tirante for a spot in the quarterfinals. He's been a different player indoors lately, with 19 wins and only four losses on indoor courts since the start of 2025, and this is his third trip to the Paris round of 16. That's a big turnaround at an event where he'd lost his opener in each of the previous four years.
The Smacktok lean: Ruud served seven aces against a top-10 returner and says he's swinging freely indoors. We're leaning higher on Ruud's aces in the round of 16.
