Cedric Gray Out vs Jets Week 1

Tennessee Titans linebacker Cedric Gray is ruled out for Sunday's season opener against the New York Jets after a UTV accident put him in the NFL concussion protocol on Monday. Gray, the driver in the accident, did not practice Wednesday or Thursday and was officially ruled out Friday, ESPN's Turron Davenport reported.

That is a gut punch for a defense that leaned on Gray last year. The third-year linebacker led the Titans with 164 tackles in 2025 and was locked in as the starting weakside linebacker entering Week 1. Now Nashville opens without him.

Who starts in Gray's spot

Rookie Anthony Hill Jr. or veteran James Williams Sr. are in line to start. Hill worked exclusively at middle linebacker in camp, while Williams bounced between strongside and weakside and started alongside Gray and Cody Barton in the second preseason game against Seattle. Tennessee also used Barton and Gray in sub packages earlier in the preseason.

"My mindset is to go out there and just do my job," Williams told ESPN. "Execute the game plan, play fast and violent." Head coach Robert Saleh sounded calm about the room Friday: "I love our linebacker room. I think we have five legitimate starters. That group has really stepped up so we'll be fine." The Titans are elevating Mohamoud Diabate from the practice squad for the opener.

Sunday vs the Jets

Kickoff is Sunday in what was supposed to be Gray's statement start as the tackle machine who just led the club. Fantasy IDP boards should park Gray and bump Williams or Hill for one week of volume. Titans fans wanted continuity at linebacker. They get a concussion stamp, a practice-squad elevation, and a reminder that Week 1 depth charts never survive Friday.

Gray's availability beyond the opener still runs through the protocol. Until he clears, Saleh will keep rolling the next man up. The Jets get a Titans defense missing its leading tackler from a year ago. Tennessee gets an early test of whether that five-starter linebacker room is real.

Gray's absence also reshapes how Tennessee wants to play early downs. Saleh's group likes to stay multiple at linebacker, and Gray's tackle volume last season gave them a green light to keep him on the field. Without him, the staff leans on Williams' camp tape and Hill's draft pedigree while Diabate gives them another body for packages.

Week 1 already had enough noise around the Titans. Adding a UTV accident and a concussion stamp was not on the script. Gray's next step is clearing protocol. Until then, Nashville's linebacker depth chart is a Friday puzzle instead of a settled room.
