McDavid Chases 20 Points as Oilers Host Utah
By Smacktok

Connor McDavid is already rewriting the early scoring board. The Edmonton Oilers captain has 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) in six games and can become the fastest player to 20 points in a season since Mario Lemieux did it in seven games in 1988-89 when the Oilers host the Utah Mammoth tonight at Rogers Place (9 p.m. ET).
Edmonton is 5-0-1 and the only NHL team without a regulation loss. A point tonight would stretch the season-opening point streak to seven games, matching the 1983-84 club for the second-longest start in franchise history behind the 15-game open of 1984-85.
Captain pace, blue-line help
McDavid sits atop the NHL scoring race. Defenseman Evan Bouchard is second league-wide with 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in the same six-game sample. That is the kind of early firepower that turns a Western Conference race into a nightly highlight package for Oilers fans who have watched McDavid chase history in October before.
Utah arrives at 5-2-0 after winning two straight and three of its last four, holding a one-point lead in the Central Division. The Mammoth are not a soft landing. They are a measuring stick for whether Edmonton's hot start travels past the first two weeks.
Rogers Place on Thursday
Twenty points in seven games or fewer is Lemieux territory. McDavid needs three points tonight to match that clock. Even without the milestone, the Oilers' undefeated-in-regulation open already has the building loud. Oilers fans do not need a history lecture when No. 97 is flying. They need another night where the captain makes the scoresheet look crowded by the third period.
Thursday's card across the league is deep, but the national eye still finds McDavid when the pace looks like this. Utah tries to slow him. Edmonton tries to keep the only clean regulation sheet in the NHL. For fantasy boards and bar arguments alike, the question is simple: how soon does McDavid hit 20?
McDavid's early heater is not empty box-score noise. Thirteen assists in six games means the captain is finding linemates before defenses can set. Bouchard's 14 points from the blue line give Edmonton a second engine that opposing coaches have to account for on every power play. Utah's Central lead is real, and a road win in Rogers Place would be a statement that the Mammoth belong in the same conversation.
Oilers fans have seen October points piles before. The difference this week is the franchise point-streak chase sitting next to a scoring race nobody else has touched. Three points tonight and Lemieux's seven-game mark is matched. Anything less and the streak talk still lives as long as Edmonton refuses a regulation loss. Either way, Thursday belongs to No. 97 until someone slows him down.
