Cooper Rush Starts Again vs Panthers

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Cooper Rush will make his second straight start Sunday when Carolina visits Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Michael Penix Jr. ruled out and Tua Tagovailoa doubtful on the final Week 2 injury report. NBC Sports and CBS Atlanta both locked the board Friday: Penix remains sidelined while rehabbing his knee, Tagovailoa's oblique kept him limited or out of practice all week, and Rush keeps the job for the Panthers matchup inside the dome.

Rush's Week 1 tape against Pittsburgh was bumpy (143 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions on 22 attempts), so fantasy managers already cooling Drake London to WR2 territory should stay conservative while the veteran is under center. Rookie Jack Strand is listed as the backup.

Why Atlanta is still here

Penix's ACL recovery calendar never promised a clean Week 2 return, and Friday's OUT stamp just made the obvious official. Tagovailoa's oblique added a second unavailable name to a QB room that suddenly leans entirely on Rush's experience. For a Falcons offense that wants to lean on London, Kyle Pitts, and the run game, that means safer concepts and fewer deep shots until Penix or Tagovailoa actually practice fully again.

ESPN sources had already floated Rush as the expected Week 2 starter earlier Friday before the injury report made it formal. That alignment between the rumor mill and the official sheet is exactly what fantasy and betting desks needed before Sunday's 1 p.m. ET window.

CBS Atlanta framed the same trio: Penix out, Tagovailoa doubtful, Rush starting. That is the Sunday card Atlanta takes into Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

1 p.m. ET at the Benz

Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET Sunday for Panthers at Falcons. Carolina is coming off that 59-point loss in Chicago, so Atlanta's temporary QB1 gets a home building and a wounded visitor. The longer story is still Penix's ramp and whether Tagovailoa can clear the oblique in time for Week 3.

For Falcons fans, a second Rush start is not the plan they sketched in March. It is the plan Friday's injury report forced. London, Pitts, and the run game will have to carry Sunday until the QB room gets healthier.

Sunday's card, though, is Rush's ball. The Falcons will live with the veteran until the practice report says otherwise.
