Medvedev Beats Tsitsipas to Reach Shanghai Quarters
By Smacktok

Daniil Medvedev keeps finding October comfort in Shanghai. The fifth seed beat longtime rival Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday to reach the Rolex Shanghai Masters quarterfinals for the fourth time in his past five trips, and he is now the only former champion still alive in the draw.
There was none of the old verbal fireworks this time. Medvedev served clean, never faced a break point, and finished in 84 minutes. He improved to 11-5 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head series against Tsitsipas and to 17-5 for his career in Shanghai.
Serve first, drama second
"I love Shanghai as a city," Medvedev said on court. "It is one of my favourite stops on Tour, so trying to stay as long as possible. I am playing great. Today was a different game style than on the Grandstand. But served great, zero break points to face, so I am very happy about it."
He targeted Tsitsipas' backhand and won the baseline battle, committing eight fewer unforced errors (10-18). Per ESPN and the AP, Medvedev also became just the fourth man, after Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray, to reach the Shanghai last eight in three straight years. The ATP Tour noted he is the sixth man to make the quarters here at least four times.
He has yet to drop a set this week while chasing a fourth title of 2026 and a first Masters 1000 trophy since 2023. The PIF ATP Live Race To Turin has him eighth, in position for a seventh Nitto ATP Finals appearance if he keeps stacking wins.
Who is waiting in the quarters
Medvedev's next opponent is Tommy Paul or Zizou Bergs. Paul faces Bergs later for that spot. Elsewhere on Wednesday, Rafael Jodar rallied from a set down for a third straight match to beat Botic van de Zandschulp, and Casper Ruud advanced when Felix Auger-Aliassime retired with a knee issue while trailing 5-2.
The top half is already set from Tuesday: Alexander Zverev versus Alex de Minaur, and Arthur Gea versus Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Medvedev is the proven Shanghai closer in that mix after lifting the trophy here in 2019.
Stay as long as possible
Shanghai has been Medvedev's happy place for years, and Wednesday was another clean data point. Serve holds, backhand pressure, no break points faced. Tsitsipas never found a foothold. For fans who remember their louder Australian Open chapters, this one was businesslike and brief.
Next up is another quarterfinal in a city he keeps calling one of his favorites. Keep the sets clean, keep the race to Turin moving, and see how deep this October run can go.
