Daniil Medvedev Reaches Vienna Semis, Clinches Turin Spot

Daniil Medvedev needed just 95 minutes on Friday to beat qualifier Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 and reach the Vienna semis at the Erste Bank Open. The bigger news came with the handshake. The win locked up Medvedev's place at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, his seventh trip to the season finale.

That matters a lot for a guy who was not there last year. Medvedev made the Finals six years in a row from 2019 through 2024, then missed out in 2025. Now he joins Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton as the only players already confirmed for Turin, which runs November 15 to 22 at Inalpi Arena.

A Clean, Quick Quarterfinal

This one never really got tight. Medvedev, the No. 3 seed in Vienna and No. 5 in the world, set the rhythm from the first game and gave Mannarino, ranked 73rd, almost nothing to work with. Gazzetta counted 27 winners for the Russian, and he closed it in straight sets on Centre Court without much drama.

Vienna is a good building for him, too. He won this event in 2022, and he is now two wins away from doing it again. His semifinal opponent on Saturday will be the winner of Carlos Alcaraz and Tommy Paul.

The Fall Turnaround

The wild part is how fast this happened. Medvedev's 2026 Grand Slam run was flat, with no trip past the fourth round at any major. Then the Asian swing flipped everything. He won titles in Hangzhou and Almaty, made the semis in Beijing and Shanghai, and went 18-2 across that stretch.

The numbers that matter right now:

  • 7 straight wins on tour after Friday

  • 52 match wins this season, his first 50-win year since 2023

  • 4 titles in 2026

He also has real history at the Finals. Medvedev won the whole thing in 2020, made the final again in 2021 before losing to Zverev, and owns a 12-11 record at the event.

What It Means for the Race to Turin

With Medvedev in, four of the eight spots are spoken for. Jannik Sinner is out for the rest of 2026, so the remaining places are wide open heading into next week's Rolex Paris Masters, the last Masters 1000 of the year and the final stop of the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. Flavio Cobolli, Arthur Fils, Frances Tiafoe, Rafael Jodar and Alex de Minaur are all in the mix behind him.

For Medvedev, the pressure is basically off. He can play Saturday's semifinal and Paris loose, knowing his ticket to Turin is already punched.

My Smacktok lean for Saturday: Medvedev to take at least a set in the semifinal. Seven straight wins and an 18-2 run through Asia say his game is as locked in as it has been in years.
