Dansby Swanson Aims for Friday vs Reds

Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson is aiming to return Friday, Sept. 18, for the series opener in Cincinnati if his Triple-A Iowa rehab games go clean, per Cubs reporter Taylor McGregor and follow-up notes from MLB.com. Swanson has been out since mid-August with a left oblique strain and sits on the 10-day injured list.
McGregor reported Monday that Swanson would play Tuesday and Wednesday with Iowa, then join the big-league club Friday against the Reds if everything holds. ClutchPoints, citing MLB.com on Tuesday, said that Friday return expectation remained intact as Chicago pushes for the top National League wild-card spot.
Oblique timeline into the stretch
Manager Craig Counsell had already mapped activation ahead of the Sept. 18-20 Cincinnati series, according to earlier reporting from Patrick Mooney of The Athletic via CBS Sports. The Grade 2 left oblique cost Swanson roughly a month. A short Iowa rehab is the last box before the 28-man roster stamp.
Swanson entered the absence near a 20-20 pace with 18 home runs and 17 stolen bases, even as his average sat at .216 with a .704 OPS. The glove at shortstop is the bigger stretch-run value for a Cubs club fighting Philadelphia for wild-card positioning while trailing Milwaukee in the NL Central.
Nico Hoerner and the rest of the infield have covered. Adding Swanson back for the final nine regular-season games changes defensive alignment and lineup depth immediately if the oblique stays quiet.
What Cubs fans should watch
Track the Iowa box scores Tuesday and Wednesday first. Any early exit or soreness report can push activation past Friday. If those games are clean, expect Swanson in Cincinnati for the series opener and a shortstop who can still swipe a bag and take a mistake pitch out.
Fantasy managers who stashed him can plan a Friday activation, not a mystery September return. Cubs fans hunting a wild-card cushion get their everyday shortstop back at the exact moment the schedule tightens.
Two rehab games. Then Friday in Cincinnati. That is the sourced plan until the Cubs say otherwise.
