David Pastrnak Wins It in Shootout, Bruins Top Vegas

Three rounds, one goal. David Pastrnak slipped a shot past Carter Hart in the third round of the shootout, the only shootout goal of the night, and the Boston Bruins beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 at TD Garden on Monday night, the AP reported.

That makes six straight home wins for Boston, which improved to 11-4-1 and 7-1-0 on home ice. Vegas is heading the other way. The Golden Knights have now lost five of six since an 8-2 start and sit at 9-5-2.

Swayman Set Up David Pastrnak

Pastrnak got the glory, but Jeremy Swayman made it possible. He stopped all three Vegas shooters, Trevor Connelly, Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner, giving Pastrnak the room to end it. Swayman made 21 saves in regulation and overtime too.

Pastrnak also had an assist in regulation and logged 21:31 of ice time, with 6:30 of that on the power play. Boston leans on him heavily with the man advantage, and it showed.

How Boston Built the Lead

The Bruins jumped ahead 2-0 in the second period. James Hagens scored his sixth goal of the season, and Morgan Geekie added a power-play goal. Elias Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov, Pavel Zacha and Pastrnak picked up the assists.

Vegas pushed back. Mark Stone knocked in a loose puck on the power play to cut it to 2-1, with Tomas Hertl and Marner assisting. Then Connelly tied it 7:23 into the third, grabbing a loose puck in front and getting it past Swayman.

The numbers that matter:

  • Bruins: 6 straight home wins

  • Golden Knights: power-play goal allowed in 7 of their last 8 games

  • Hart: 25 saves for Vegas

Vegas Can't Kill Penalties

That penalty kill stat is the one Golden Knights fans have to be sick of. Geekie's power-play goal was just the latest, and when a team that started 8-2 drops five of six, special teams usually have something to do with it. Eichel was held without a point and went 0 for 1 in the shootout.

Boston, meanwhile, has won two in a row after back-to-back losses and keeps taking care of business at home.

Both Teams Head to Pittsburgh

Vegas plays at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, and the Bruins visit the Penguins on Thursday. Pastrnak is getting a big chunk of the power-play minutes and already has eight goals this season, so the Smacktok lean is higher on his points in Pittsburgh. When the game is on the line, Boston puts the puck on his stick.
