Devers Has Core Surgery; Giants Season Over

San Francisco Giants slugger Rafael Devers underwent left-side core muscle surgery on Tuesday, ending a season that already closed when the club placed him on the 60-day injured list. MLB.com's Maria I. Guardado reported a recovery timeline of about three months, which points to a normal ramp into 2027 spring training. Zach Sweet of MLB.com first relayed the Tuesday surgery plan after the Giants shut him down.
Devers finished with 37 home runs and 98 RBI and a .258/.340/.525 slash line across 633 plate appearances, per MLB Trade Rumors. Those 37 homers are the most by a Giant since Barry Bonds hit 45 in 2004. He homered in his last two games and piled up eight homers with 20 RBI in his final 11 games while playing through the core issue for much of the year.
How the shutdown happened
The Giants put Devers on the 60-day IL on Sunday and sent him to Philadelphia to see Dr. William Meyers, the same specialist who recently operated on Matt Chapman. Manager Tony Vitello said the club had "pushed it to the brink" on timing and wanted rehab started before the winter calendar tightens. Devers had started every game until a rare day off on Sept. 9 after leading the majors with 163 games played last season.
San Francisco's 2026 season is already a lost year on the standings board, with a pile of players on the injured list. Devers and Bryce Eldridge were the clear bright spots. Shutting down the hottest bat on the roster still hurts fantasy lineups and Oracle Park crowds that watched him mash late.
He opened slowly at .207 with two homers through April, then climbed into one of the best power stretches in the National League. Playing that well with a core injury that needed surgery is the part Giants fans will remember when the final slash line prints.
What comes next for Devers
Three months of recovery is the sourced stamp for now. That is not a red-shirt year. It is a winter rehab aimed at being ready when pitchers and catchers report. Until then, Eldridge and the rest of a patched Giants lineup finish the schedule without their middle-of-the-order anchor.
Fantasy managers who rode Devers through the late surge already cashed most of the value. What remains is the health note for next year's drafts: core surgery in mid-September, three-month recovery, spring target. The Giants need that version more than another September DH day.
Keep the 37 and 98 next to the surgery note. That is a season worth the scar tissue, and San Francisco will need the healthy version in 2027.
