Gauff Beats Jovic to Reach US Open Quarters

Coco Gauff took care of fellow American Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 on Arthur Ashe Stadium Monday night and locked a US Open quarterfinal, per Reuters.

The No. 4 seed stays on track for a third major title and gets No. 5 Mirra Andreeva next, a French Open champion waiting on the other side of the net.

Broken early, then the surge

Gauff dropped her opening service game, then flipped the script. She won the next six games and closed the first set in about half an hour. Jovic, the No. 14 seed and just 18, finally broke for 3-2 in the second, but Gauff broke right back and finished in roughly 80 minutes.

It was Gauff's cleanest Flushing night of the fortnight. Serve plus defense, first US Open quarterfinal since she won the whole thing in 2023. Jovic had the crowd noise and the youth card. Gauff had the level.

Reuters noted the all-American Round of 16 flavor on Ashe. Gauff treated it like a business trip. No five-set drama, no third-set rescue. Just a straight-sets stamp.

Andreeva next, Slam context

Andreeva reached the last eight earlier Monday by coming back past Anastasia Potapova. That quarterfinal pairs the last two French Open champions on the women's side. Gauff already owns a Flushing Meadows title. Andreeva owns Paris. Tuesday and Wednesday's quarterfinal slate is where those paths collide.

Elsewhere in the women's draw, Zheng Qinwen knocked out Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina beat Naomi Osaka, so the bottom half is chaos. Gauff's half still runs through Andreeva.

Monday night belonged to the 2023 champ looking like herself again. Quarters stamped. Andreeva on deck. Flushing still has her name in the conversation for another deep September.
