Greg Newsome Gets 3-Year, $46M Giants Extension

Greg Newsome II isn't going anywhere. The Giants and their starting cornerback agreed Tuesday to a three-year, $46 million extension with $32 million guaranteed, halfway through his first season in New York.

That's a huge bet on a guy who signed a one-year, $8 million deal in March, and it says a lot about where this team thinks it's headed. The Giants are 4-2-1 and sitting on top of the NFC East, and they just locked up one of the main reasons why.

Newsome's Been Lights Out in Coverage

Agent Erik Burkhardt confirmed the deal to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The new money works out to about $15.3 million a year, which isn't even top 20 at the position, and that's where it starts to look like a bargain for New York.

Newsome's numbers this year tell the story. Through six games with the Giants, he hasn't allowed a touchdown, and CBS Sports, using TruMedia data, has quarterbacks throwing for only a 57.7 passer rating when they target him. His previous career best was 73.2. He's also allowed just two completions of 20-plus yards and has an interception to go with six passes defended.

It's been a wild 13 months for him. The Browns took him in the first round in 2021, traded him to Jacksonville last October, and then the Jaguars let him walk in free agency. The Giants grabbed him on a prove-it deal, and he proved it in half a season.

Why the Giants Didn't Wait

New York declined Deonte Banks' fifth-year option for 2027 last spring, so there was a real chance the Giants could've lost both starting corners next offseason. Now they don't have to worry about Newsome hitting the market. He's 26, he's playing the best ball of his career, and he's under contract through his prime.

It also tells you the front office isn't treating this hot start like a fluke. You don't hand out $32 million in guarantees in November if you think the wheels are about to come off.

What's Next for New York

The Giants head to Philadelphia on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 10 AM PT at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles are 2-6, losers of six straight, and Nick Sirianni said Monday that Tanner McKee is staying at quarterback. McKee's averaging about 213 passing yards a start since taking over.

The Smacktok lean: Newsome hasn't given up a touchdown all year, and McKee's been stuck in neutral. We're leaning lower on McKee's passing yards against New York.
