Hurts 3 TD Passes as Eagles Edge Commanders

Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes and the Philadelphia Eagles held on for a 24-22 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field after Washington's failed late two-point try. Hurts' third scoring throw put the Eagles up 24-16 with about six minutes left.

That is a messy Week 1 for both NFC East clubs, and fantasy managers who started Hurts as a locked QB1 got the touchdown ceiling without a clean box score. The Eagles needed DeVonta Smith's onside recovery to close it after Jayden Daniels' late punch. A slow first half and a flurry of fourth-quarter points made Lincoln Financial feel like a playoff opener instead of September football.

Goedert and Wicks, then the late scramble

Hurts finished 14 of 25 for 203 yards. Dallas Goedert's 43-yard touchdown was his second scoring catch of the night and gave Philadelphia breathing room at 24-16. Hurts also hit Dontayvion Wicks for a touchdown and connected with Wicks on a 64-yard play earlier. DeVonta Smith added a 31-yard catch, and Saquon Barkley ripped a 42-yard run, but three straight three-and-outs to open the second half kept Washington within reach.

Stefon Diggs' touchdown catch cut the deficit to one after an unsportsmanlike celebration penalty forced Washington to settle for being down 17-16. Hurts answered with the scramble-and-Goedert drive that put the Eagles back up eight.

Daniels' late score, failed shovel

Daniels finished 18 of 34 for 164 yards and two touchdowns after a 6-of-16 first half. He found rookie Antonio Williams for a 1-yard touchdown with 1:01 left, then offensive coordinator David Blough called a shovel pass to John Bates for two. The Eagles diagnosed it cleanly. Smith recovered the onside kick, and Philadelphia walked off 24-22.

Washington's fourth quarter showed why Daniels remains a weekly threat even after a cold first half. Diggs' celebration penalty and the failed shovel were the difference between a road steal and a one-score loss. Philadelphia's three-and-outs after halftime almost invited the comeback, then Hurts' scramble chain and Goedert's reverse-field score slammed the door shut enough to survive.

Next week the Eagles visit the Titans. The Commanders go to Dallas. Fantasy rooms that faded Hurts on early-season volume worries watched three touchdown passes and a win. Managers who streamed Diggs for the debut splash got the score and still left empty-handed.

Three scoring throws. Twenty-four to twenty-two. Onside recovered. That is the Eagles' Week 1 escape.
