Iga Swiatek: Out of US Open Mixed Doubles

Iga Swiatek is out of US Open mixed doubles. She withdrew from the event with Casper Ruud after a physically demanding stretch that included a Canadian Open title and a Cincinnati semifinal loss to Jessica Pegula. Tennis365 carried her statement. "Looking back at a physically demanding few weeks on court and after speaking to my Team, I've decided it's best for me to pass on mixed doubles at the US Open this year. Right now, I need to rest, recharge and fully focus on preparing for the singles tournament."
"As always, I was really looking forward to playing alongside @casperruud, so Casper, till next time," she added, per Tennis365 and the Daily Express. Last year Swiatek and Ruud were runners-up to Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. Mixed doubles is a Fan Week sprint on Aug. 25 and 26, 16 teams, fast-four scoring. Singles starts Aug. 30. She chose the extra days.

Ruud needed a partner. Diana Shnaider needed one too after Daniil Medvedev pulled out to play the ATP 250 in Winston-Salem, the Express and Tennis Up To Date both wrote. They teamed up. Tennis Tonic listed Shnaider and Ruud as a wildcard. Tennis Tonic also had the top seeds as Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic, with Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz next. Pegula is the same player who beat Swiatek in the Cincinnati semifinal, then lost Sunday's all-American final to Coco Gauff. Swiatek's mixed week is now rest. Pegula's mixed week is Fritz. Jannik Sinner is already out of singles. Swiatek is not. She is saving the legs for Aug. 30.

The Express said she pulled out shortly before Sunday evening's draw. Tennis365 called her one of the first high-profile names off the mixed list.
