Jalen Hurts is out for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers after a follow-up ultrasound found movement in a superficial blood clot in his calf. Tanner McKee will start for the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6, with the club prioritizing Hurts' health over any rush back to the lineup.

The clot story has already taken a few turns. Hurts was cleated in the Week 4 loss to the Rams. The clot was found in London before the Jaguars game. He was cleared then and played Sunday. The Wednesday follow-up showed movement, and that is why he is sidelined now for the Panthers matchup.

Not headed to IR (for now)

Per ESPN reporting carried by CBS Sports on Oct. 17, the Eagles are not planning to place Hurts on injured reserve. NFL Network reporting on NFL.com matches that stance while the team gathers more information on treatment. He is out indefinitely while those decisions get made, but the IR door is not the plan the club is advertising this week.

That matters for fantasy boards and for fans who watched Philadelphia lean on Hurts through every stress test. A short-term absence without an IR designation keeps the return path open if treatment clears him sooner than a four-week clock would allow. It also tells the locker room the franchise is treating this as a medical timeline first.

Out indefinitely is still serious language. It is not the same as a season on ice. Philadelphia is drawing that line in public on purpose.

McKee gets the ball; Milton joins

McKee starts against Carolina. Cole Payton is the listed backup. Philadelphia also signed Joe Milton off the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad to add quarterback depth. The depth chart is no longer a one-man conversation this week in the Linc.

Eagles fans have seen McKee in spots before. This is the first time the job is his because Hurts cannot go. The standard does not drop. Carolina will test whether the supporting cast can keep drives on schedule without the usual Hurts improvisation outside the pocket.

Milton's addition is depth insurance, not a starter coronation. McKee gets the first shot. Payton stays ready. Hurts stays in treatment.

Health first, then the rest

A superficial calf clot is not a shoulder bruise you tape up and ignore. Philadelphia is saying the quiet part out loud: treat the player, then decide the football timeline. Hurts sits Sunday. McKee starts. The IR paper stays on the shelf for now.

That is the entire update fans need before kickoff against the Panthers. Win or lose with McKee, the bigger story is whether Hurts' calf clears cleanly. Everything else is Week 6 noise until the medical staff says otherwise.
