Joe Burrow let one fly 45 yards down the middle, and Ja'Marr Chase pinned it against his shoulder pad with one arm for six. That catch made it 28-10 late in the third quarter, and Burrow finished with four touchdown passes as the Bengals held off the Dolphins 31-24 at Hard Rock Stadium, per the AP.
Cincinnati needed this one. The win snaps a two-game skid and gets the Bengals back to 3-2. Miami falls to 0-5, per the AP.
Joe Burrow spreads it around
Burrow went 23 of 32 for 190 yards with no interceptions, per the Bengals.com box score. The yardage was modest, the scoring was not. Besides the Chase bomb, he threw touchdowns to tight ends Mike Gesicki and Tanner Hudson and running back Samaje Perine, and he completed passes to nine different receivers against a young Dolphins secondary, per the AP.
Gesicki's 4-yard score came three plays after Dohnte Meyers returned the opening kickoff 81 yards, and the former Dolphin celebrated with the Griddy. Cincinnati led 21-7 at the half.
Chase was the big question coming in. He had been questionable after a concussion last Sunday against Jacksonville, and he caught six passes for 77 yards. "You can see what number one can do whenever the ball's in the air," Burrow said, per the AP. If you trusted Chase through the questionable tag, he paid you back.
Jordan Battle reads Malik Willis
Safety Jordan Battle intercepted Malik Willis on back-to-back second-quarter drives, per the AP, after saying during the week he had spotted a tell in how Willis taps the ball before he throws. Willis finished 15 of 27 for 137 yards with a touchdown and two picks, and he lost a fumble too.
The Dolphins also wasted their best chance to get back in it. Late in the third they had the ball inside the Cincinnati 1, then Willis took an 8-yard sack and threw incomplete to Greg Dulcich, and Miami settled for a 29-yard Riley Patterson field goal to make it 21-10, per the AP. Ollie Gordon II gave them 88 rushing yards and a score, per Bengals.com, but drives like that one are why Miami is still winless.
Miami made it interesting late. Rookie Kevin Coleman Jr. caught a fourth-quarter touchdown, and Willis ran one in from a yard out with 45 seconds left to make it a one-score game. The onside kick went out of bounds, and that was that, per the AP.
It got a little loose at the end, but Burrow and Chase looked like Burrow and Chase again. At 3-2, the Bengals are right back in the AFC North fight.
