Joe Espada might be trading Houston orange for Seattle teal. The Astros manager is set to meet with the Seattle Mariners about their managerial vacancy, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Tuesday, and Houston has granted Seattle permission to talk with him. Neither club has confirmed it yet.

That is a wild twist in the AL West. Espada has spent nine years in the Astros dugout, six as bench coach and the last three as manager, and his contract runs out at the end of this month. Houston has not made an official call on either its manager or general manager job.

Why Espada fits what Seattle wants

The Mariners moved on from Dan Wilson after a 76-86 season that never got going. Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez underperformed, and a team that came within one win of the franchise's first pennant in 2025 never looked like that club in 2026.

President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has said prior big league managing experience is "not a prerequisite," but "it would be preferred." Espada checks that box after three seasons running the Astros.

"We need fresh thought," Dipoto said at his end-of-season news conference. "We need something new." He also said the club wants someone from outside who "might be able to poke holes in what we're doing."

Seattle was also eyeing Torey Lovullo, per MLB.com, but he re-upped with the Diamondbacks on a two-year deal. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt, the most obvious fit on paper, is reportedly under contract for 2027.

What Espada built in Houston

Espada's Astros went 256-229 in his three seasons and won the AL West in 2024 and 2026. Over his nine years with the club, Houston won the 2022 World Series, captured two other AL pennants, won seven division titles and made the postseason eight times.

This year was rougher. The Astros won the division at 81-81, then got swept by the White Sox in the AL Wild Card Series. After that, Espada made it clear he wanted to stay.

"I respect the process and how blessed I've been of being here for over nine years and experienced so many division titles, Championship Series, World Series, winning one," he said. "As a bench coach, as a manager, I have witnessed so many great moments, so obviously I would like to continue enjoying those moments."

Houston is also without a general manager after parting ways with Dana Brown on Aug. 24, which leaves Espada's future in limbo while the Mariners make their pitch.

A job worth chasing

Seattle's opening might be the best one out there. The Mariners have a homegrown rotation, two stars in Rodríguez and Raleigh, a win-now mandate and a division MLB.com called historically weak this year. Seattle and Philadelphia are the only two clubs with a managerial vacancy right now.

Picture Espada in a Mariners hoodie at T-Mobile Park. Astros fans would hate it, and Seattle fans might love it.
