John Harbaugh Says Giants Are Open for Any Trade Call
John Harbaugh is not hiding the ball. The Giants coach admitted Monday he called Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk and left a voicemail about trading for Jeffery Simmons, and he said New York is open for business ahead of the NFL trade deadline.
Simmons ended up going to the Bears last Thursday for multiple first-round picks, but Harbaugh made clear the Giants are still shopping. "I left a message because you're turning over every stone, going to try everything," he told reporters, ESPN reported. "We're open for any call."
No Secret Handshake in New York
Calling an owner directly is not the usual route, and Harbaugh knows it. He said the Giants make calls at every level and do not follow any unwritten rule about who you are supposed to talk to.
"We're not part of any secret society oath that says you can only talk to somebody," Harbaugh said. "We didn't get memo'd on that." He even tried to name the song that goes with it ("Call Me Maybe" or Blondie's "Call Me," take your pick).
The interior of the defensive line is a clear need, which is why Simmons was a target. ESPN sources also say the Giants have interest in Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, a move that would also cost multiple high picks.
Running Back Is a Real Need
The backfield is thin right now. Cam Skattebo (hamstring) was working on the side with a trainer Monday, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. (hamstring) was recently placed on injured reserve. Players are on board with a big swing too. "It's a players' league," tackle Andrew Thomas said. "Anytime you have an opportunity to acquire whoever the player may be, the thought is that they'll help our team win."
The catch is the draft pick count. Harbaugh said the Giants have only five picks in the 2027 draft and would rather spend 2028 picks if they can. "Yeah, it's easier to put it on the credit card," he said with a laugh. General manager Joe Schoen has said any deal has to be a short-term and long-term win.
Deadline and a Big Week Ahead
The trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT). Before that, the division-leading Giants come off their bye with two division games in four days: at the Eagles on Sunday (10 a.m. PT) and home against the Commanders on Thursday, Nov. 12 (5:15 p.m. PT, Prime Video).
For Smacktok players, with Tracy on IR and Skattebo limited to side work, Giants rushing props are a wait and see until we know who is actually carrying the ball Sunday in Philly.
Harbaugh wants a difference maker and he is not shy about dialing for one. If Taylor or another big name lands in New York next week, nobody can say he did not warn us.
