Josh Allen was about to get swallowed on third-and-8 from the Las Vegas 12. He stepped up, hit a Raider with a basketball-style stepback, pulled five defenders toward him and flipped a shovel pass over the pile to Keon Coleman in the middle of the end zone. That touchdown was the 258th of his career, counting regular season and playoffs, tying Jim Kelly for the most in Buffalo Bills history. The Bills went on to beat the Las Vegas Raiders 33-30 at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday.
Buffalo is 5-1 and heads into its bye on a high. The Raiders fell to 3-3 with their third straight loss.
Allen Ties Kelly, Cook Scores the Winner
Allen finished with 255 passing yards and two touchdowns. The first was a 9-yard screen in the first half that Khalil Shakir caught behind the line and weaved into the end zone behind a wall of blockers. After a big rushing day last week, Allen was held to one yard on the ground.
The game turned in the fourth quarter. Kirk Cousins led a 91-yard drive and dropped a ball over a defender to Tre Tucker just inside the pylon on third-and-8 from the 11, tying it 23-23. Buffalo answered from its own 34, with James Cook picking up 46 of the drive's 66 yards, and Cook got shoved in from 3 yards out for a 30-23 lead with 4:43 left.
Cook carried 22 times for 95 yards and the touchdown and caught three passes for 58 more. If he was in your lineup, that is exactly the day you wanted.
The Bills Defense Bent, Then Closed
Buffalo's defense set the tone early in the second half. Dorian Williams jumped a Cousins throw for his first career interception, which set up the Coleman touchdown and a 23-13 lead. Later, Las Vegas ran 15 plays and converted three third downs but could not punch it in from the 1, settling for a 23-yard field goal after a Greg Gaines tackle for loss and a pass breakup by Davison Igbinosun.
After Cook's score, Greg Rousseau batted a pass at the line and the Raiders punted quickly. Buffalo milked the clock, burned all of the Raiders' timeouts, and Tyler Bass hit a 38-yarder with 1:56 left. That kick ended up deciding it. Cousins hit Tucker for a 44-yard diving touchdown two plays later, but the Bills recovered the onside kick and ran it out.
Cousins threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns, both to Tucker, and Ashton Jeanty scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter.
Bye Week, Then the Ravens
Buffalo is off in Week 7 and hosts the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. ET. Allen goes into the bye sharing the franchise record with Kelly, and the next touchdown pass he throws makes it his alone.
