Judge Homers as Yankees Clinch Playoffs

Aaron Judge blasted his first home run since May 24, and the New York Yankees clinched a postseason berth Monday night with an 8-3 win over the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis. The three-run shot capped a six-run eighth and gave the club its record 61st trip to October, the ninth in the last 10 seasons.

Judge turned on an A.J. Minter cutter and drove it 415 feet into the second deck in left for his 18th homer of the year, pushing New York ahead 7-2. He had been 3-for-20 with 11 strikeouts since returning last week after missing 84 games with a right rib stress fracture. That is the captain stamp Yankees fans have been waiting on since the IL stretch started.

How the clinch actually landed

The math flipped mid-inning. With Spencer Jones batting and two outs in the eighth, Detroit finished off Toronto, locking New York into at least an American League wild-card spot before the final outs in Minnesota. The Yankees still finished the job on the field, which is the cleaner celebration. Jose Caballero went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, and John Schreiber closed it with 1 1/3 hitless innings per the ESPN recap.

New York sits at 87-63 and is still chasing Tampa Bay in the AL East after the Rays clinched their own berth Friday. Eighteen Yankees have already landed on the injured list this season, including Jazz Chisholm Jr. last week with a sprained right thumb. Getting Judge's power back in the middle of that lineup is the October story as much as the wild-card stamp itself.

Will Warren threw 5 2/3 innings without an earned run Monday. Postseason rotation chatter still centers on Cam Schlittler, Carlos Rodón, Max Fried, and Gerrit Cole, with Warren and Clarke Schmidt (returning from Tommy John) likely bullpen options. After losing the 2024 World Series to the Dodgers and falling to Toronto in last year's ALDS, the group that just punched its ticket wants a deeper run.

"The group we have, you get us in there and anything can happen," Judge said afterward. "I like our chances."
