Towns Extension Talks Stall Ahead of Knicks Camp

Contract talks between Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks have stalled, and an agreement before training camp is considered unlikely, sources told ESPN, as the defending champions ask Towns to take a discount from a max-level extension. ESPN's Bobby Marks has Towns eligible for up to four years and about $273 million. The New York Post reported the max figure around $277 million and said New York wants the All-Star center to take less while staying under the second apron.

That pre-camp freeze is the board. Soft fantasy note only: none of this changes Towns's role on opening night. It does hang over Media Day and the first week of camp until somebody blinks.

Towns is due about $57 million this season and holds a $61 million player option for 2027-28. The sides can still deal any time during the year. A league source told the Post the conversations stay cordial and that New York wants Towns long-term even if the paper is not signed before camp.

Knicks fans just watched a title core try to keep James Dolan under the second apron. Mitchell Robinson already left for Boston. Jalen Brunson is due a huge extension window next year. Towns sits in the middle of that math as either the second- or third-best Knick from the playoff run.

Leon Rose once represented Towns. That history does not print a number by itself. Media Day in Tarrytown will put the question on a microphone whether the front office likes it or not.

Champions get to negotiate from a trophy. They also get to protect apron space. Towns can wait, pick up the option later, or keep pushing for closer to the max. Camp starts with the story unfinished.

Last season Towns told the Post he wanted to stay in New York for family and for the fans, not only for the check. That quote still matters. It does not fill in the blank on how far below the max he will go while Brunson's next deal looms. Knicks fans should expect the question every day until somebody moves.

Training camp is where chemistry stories usually drown out money talk. This one will not drown. Towns is too central to the title core, and the second apron is too real after Robinson walked. The stall is the news. The season is the deadline that still works.
