Kelsey Mitchell's WNBA record night happened in three quarters. ESPN and Al Jazeera reported Mitchell scored 29 points before sitting out the fourth as the Indiana Fever beat the Toronto Tempo 101-95 on Tuesday at Scotiabank Arena for a fifth straight win. That was 20 or more points for a 20th consecutive game, matching Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson for the longest such streak in WNBA history.

She did not finish the game. After an eight-point burst in less than a minute late in the third quarter, Mitchell went to the locker room and stayed there. Fever coach Stephanie White said she appeared to get “overheated” in a hot environment rather than suffer a serious injury, Al Jazeera reported. Caitlin Clark added 24 points and seven assists. Indiana still closed it. The Kelsey Mitchell WNBA record is in the book. The fourth quarter was optional.

Kelsey Mitchell's 20-game scoring streak

Twenty games. Twenty points or more. That is the Kelsey Mitchell WNBA record she now shares with Wilson. ESPN said Mitchell is the league's second-leading scorer at 24.2 points per game behind Wilson's 26.1. She had scored 20 in 36 minutes Sunday in a 95-91 overtime win at Atlanta. Tuesday she had 16 in the first quarter and 29 by the time she sat. Al Jazeera said she reached 20 on a driving layup with 6:03 left in the third that made it a 10-point game, then scored eight more in a hurry before she checked out.

Clark and Mitchell have now scored 20 or more in the same game 16 times this season, a WNBA record. Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter did it 15 times with Phoenix in 2008. That is two league marks in one box score, and one of them belongs to a pair. The Fever (24-12) are 10-2 in their last 12 and 12-3 since July 9, ESPN noted, the third-best mark in the league behind the Minnesota Lynx (13-1) and Golden State Valkyries (9-2) over that stretch.

How the Fever beat the Tempo 101-95

Indiana never trailed, ESPN said. Aliyah Boston scored 16. Sophie Cunningham made all three of her threes and finished with 13. Al Jazeera had Indiana shooting 52.9 percent to Toronto's 39.1 percent. The Fever led 33-23 after one on 13-for-21 shooting and 57-49 at the half. Toronto cut it to four in the first minute of the third on two Marina Mabrey baskets, then watched Indiana close the quarter on a 9-2 run to 81-69.

The Tempo (10-24) lost an 11th straight, tying the Seattle Storm for the longest losing streak in the WNBA this season, ESPN reported. Mabrey led Toronto with 22 points and hit back-to-back threes to make it 97-93 with 59 seconds left. Brittney Sykes scored 15 in her return from a left plantar fascia injury that had kept her out since a June 16 loss at Indiana. Aneesah Morrow had 14 points and 16 rebounds. Temi Fagbenle added 13. Kiki Rice had 10. A palming call on Mabrey and a foul on Rice ended the last push, per Al Jazeera.

What the Kelsey Mitchell WNBA record means

White's “overheated” explanation is the medical update until the Fever say otherwise. ESPN said Indiana finishes a five-game trip at Dallas on Thursday, New York on Saturday, and Chicago on Sunday. Mitchell just tied Wilson's streak and sat a quarter. Clark just dropped 24 in her first game in Canada as a player. The Fever are rolling. The Kelsey Mitchell WNBA record is the headline. The five-game winning streak is the standings version of the same night.
