Kupcho Putts Tie Solheim Cup at 8-8

Jennifer Kupcho drained back-to-back unlikely birdie putts on Nos. 17 and 18 to steal a 1-up fourballs win with Lindy Duncan and leave the Solheim Cup tied 8-8 after four sessions at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands. The Americans won the Saturday fourballs 3-1. Sunday singles will decide the crystal.

That is the kind of Day 2 closer Solheim Cup weeks live for. Kupcho and Duncan beat Carlota Ciganda and Celine Boutier in the last match on the course, and U.S. captain Angela Stanford said Kupcho had "absolutely turned the tide."

Ninety feet, then twenty-five

Kupcho arrived at the 17th green 1 down. Ciganda and Boutier were both inside 12 feet. Kupcho was off the back of the green with a putt measured around 90 to 93 feet and almost no expectation it would drop. She said she hardly even read it. The ball kept rolling, took the hill, and fell in the side door. Both Europeans missed. Match all square.

On 18 she poured in a 25-footer from the edge of the green for the last putt of the match and the 1-up point. ESPN and Sky Sports both framed the finish the same way: two sucker punches in about two hours, then a United States fourballs session locked at 3-1. The overall board sat 8-8 after two days, the third straight Solheim Cup on European soil to head into Sunday level.

Shush, ear cup, Sunday singles

Kupcho had already flashed a shush toward the home crowd earlier on the back nine. After 18 she cupped an ear, calling it playful after Ciganda's volume. Europe still got big noise from Maja Stark and Linn Grant, who went 3-0-0 for the week, while Charley Hull and Lottie Woad contributed only a half-point across four sessions. World No. 1 Nelly Korda sat the afternoon after a morning loss and entered Sunday singles at 1-1-1.

The United States needs to reach 14 points to retain the cup. From 8-8 that means six points from the 12 Sunday singles. Europe needs 6.5 for a first outright win since 2021. Heavy rain is in the Sunday forecast at Bernardus, and European captain Anna Nordqvist shrugged off the late drama by saying her side is ready for the 12 singles fights.

Golf fans who only check the board once a day just got the loudest update of the week. Fantasy golf rooms do not score Solheim Cup the same way, but anyone who cares about the flag and the putter just got a clip that will loop until the first Sunday tee time.

Kupcho made the putts. Duncan held the other half of the card. America walks into Sunday even. That is all you can ask after trailing into the afternoon.
