Kurt Suzuki is out after one season in the Los Angeles Angels dugout. The club announced Wednesday that it declined his 2027 option and will search for a new manager and coaching staff, after a year in which the Angels lost 100 games for the first time in franchise history, per ESPN.

The Angels went 62-100. That was a 10-game slide from 2025, and it broke the old franchise mark of 99 losses set in 2024.

Kurt Suzuki stays in the building

This is not a clean break. The Angels offered Suzuki a role as a special assistant, and interim general manager John Mozeliak made it clear he does not pin the record on his manager.

"Kurt has earned tremendous respect in our clubhouse, and I've seen firsthand how much he cares about our players," Mozeliak said in a statement. "I do not believe our record this year was a true reflection of his abilities as a manager."

Mozeliak added that the club has offered some members of the coaching staff positions within the organization.

Suzuki has deep roots in Anaheim. He caught for the Angels in 2021 and 2022, his final two seasons as a player, and drew strong reviews for how he handled the pitching staff. He then spent three years as a special assistant to then-GM Perry Minasian before signing a one-year deal to manage last October. Before all that, he played 16 seasons for five franchises and won the 2019 World Series with the Washington Nationals.

Angels fans liked the hire because he was one of their own. A 100-loss season was always going to test that.

One bright spot on the mound

The season was not a total loss. The rotation took a real step forward behind Reid Detmers, Walbert Urena, Grayson Rodriguez and Jose Soriano before Soriano was traded at the deadline. Angels starters posted a 4.14 ERA, 12th in the majors, after ranking 28th with a 4.91 ERA in 2025.

The problem was everything around it. Whoever takes over inherits that rotation and the rest of a roster that just lost 100 games.

A new owner and a long drought

The next manager will walk into a bigger reset. Stan Kroenke is set to take control of the club from Arte Moreno in the first quarter of 2027, and the Angels have not decided on Mozeliak's future either.

Whoever gets the job will be the sixth Angels manager since Mike Scioscia ended his 19-year run in 2018. The team has not reached the postseason since 2014 and has not won a playoff game since 2009, the last time it won the American League West.

So the hire may wait on the new owner. For a fan base that has watched six managers try since Scioscia, the real question is whether Kroenke's group finally changes more than the name in the dugout.
