Kyler Murray in Protocol for Week 2

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray began the week in the NFL concussion protocol, and coach Kevin O'Connell would not project his availability for Sunday's road game at the Chicago Bears. Murray arrived Monday "feeling pretty good" and sat in meetings and film of the Green Bay game, but clearing the five-step protocol is the only path back to practice and kickoff.

Murray's Vikings debut lasted into the first quarter of a 39-22 win over the Packers. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 18 yards with an interception and ran twice for nine yards before an illegal hit to the head ended his night. Carson Wentz finished the comeback. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo said Tuesday the team has not ruled Murray out for Week 2, with Wentz ready again if the protocol clock runs long.

Day-to-day is not a green light

"We'll defer to the medical folks and that protocol for how the week goes," O'Connell said. "We'll just take it a day at a time." Quarterbacks already wear red non-contact jerseys, so Murray could get mental reps and limited practice work before full clearance. That still does not put him on the field Sunday unless every step clears.

Venue lock for fantasy and ticket buyers: Vikings at Bears, 1 p.m. ET, Sunday, Sept. 20. Ignore any stale Week 1 rematch chatter. This is a road NFC North date, and Chicago will prepare for both Murray's dual-threat package and Wentz's veteran look.

Former team doctor David Chao noted publicly that a first concussion and dramatic-looking posturing do not automatically mean a longer absence, but the league protocol, not podcast optimism, sets the timeline. Minnesota will not rush him.

What Vikings fans should watch

Wednesday's practice participation is the first real tell. If Murray is limited or out, Wentz's Week 1 tape becomes the Week 2 plan. If Murray progresses through steps midweek, the decision may slide to Friday. Either way the picture is clear: concussion protocol, day-to-day language, Week 2 at Chicago undecided, and a backup who already won once in that role.

Minnesota's offense looked different with Wentz finishing Week 1, and Chicago will game-plan both quarterbacks until the inactive list posts. Fantasy managers should hold Murray if roster rules allow, but do not assume a snap count until the protocol clears.
