Lamar Jackson Out vs. Bills With Thumb Injury
Lamar Jackson's comeback lasted exactly one snap. The Ravens ruled their star quarterback out for the rest of Sunday's game in Buffalo with a right thumb injury he suffered on his very first throw, when Bills edge rusher Greg Rousseau got a hand up to bat the pass and smacked Jackson's throwing hand instead.
This was supposed to be the week Baltimore got its season back. Jackson had missed the previous three games with a high ankle sprain, and the Ravens offense had scored only five touchdowns in the 14 quarters he sat out, per ESPN's Jamison Hensley. Instead, the two-time MVP looked down at his hand, walked to the sideline and headed to the tunnel with his hand wrapped.
Then the Backup Went Down Too
It got worse. Backup Tyler "Snoop" Huntley went 2 of 4 for zero yards and then left in the second quarter with a right toe injury. He was listed as questionable to return.
That pushed undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano out of UConn onto the field for his first regular-season snaps. He had a strong preseason, but walking into Highmark Stadium as the No. 3 quarterback is about as tough a debut as it gets. Through the middle of the third quarter he was 6 of 10 for 72 yards with an interception and three sacks, and Buffalo led 16-7.
What It Means for Baltimore
The Ravens came in at 4-3 and trying to avoid a three-game losing streak. Every week without Jackson has looked the same: the offense stalls and the defense has to be perfect. Now they have to figure out who can actually take snaps on a short week, because Baltimore hosts Jacksonville on Thursday night at 5:15 PM PT.
There is no word yet on how serious the thumb injury is, and the team has not given a timeline. A thumb on the throwing hand is the worst spot for a quarterback, and after three games out with the ankle, Ravens fans have every right to be nervous.
Fantasy Fallout
Anyone who plugged Jackson back into a lineup got basically nothing, since he was 0 of 1 before leaving. If you have Ravens pass catchers, this week is already a mess with Fagnano under center.
My Smacktok lean: stay off Ravens passing props for Thursday until we know who is starting. With Jackson hurt and Huntley banged up, this offense could be running through a rookie on three days' rest, and that is not a spot to chase yards.
