Francisco Lindor lifted the New York Mets past the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Citi Field. Lindor homered, made a diving catch with the bases loaded in the ninth, and scored the winning run on a throwing error in the 10th. The Associated Press recap and CBS Sports box both had the last-place Mets (60-72) beating the club with the best record in baseball (81-51).

Lindor went 2 for 4 with a walk. His homer was his 13th of the season and his 154th as a Met, tying Dave Kingman for sixth on the franchise list. Luis Robert Jr. also homered, his 10th, and rookie Carson Benge had three hits, the most three-hit games among major league rookies this year (11). New York is 13-6 since selling at the trade deadline.

How did the Mets beat the Brewers in 10 innings?

Luis Lara singled home William Contreras in the fourth for a 1-0 Milwaukee lead. Lindor tied it with a homer to left-center in the fifth. Robert went deep to left in the sixth for a 2-1 Mets lead. Zach Thornton lasted six innings and allowed one run on seven hits. Nate Lavender retired all six batters he faced and stretched his career-opening scoreless streak to 9 2/3 innings.

Austin Warren could not close it. Contreras doubled to lead off the ninth, Jake Bauers walked, and pinch-hitter Christian Yelich doubled home the tying run. With the bases loaded and two outs, David Hamilton lined to short. Lindor dove to his right and snagged it. Then Trevor Megill picked Lindor off first to end the bottom of the ninth. Extra innings it was.

What was Francisco Lindor's winning play?

Jonathan Pintaro (2-0) struck out two in a hitless 10th after walking Contreras. Megill (2-3) issued an intentional walk to Benge and an unintentional walk to Robert, loading the bases with one out. Christopher Morel grounded wide of third. Hamilton's throw to the plate was wild, Lindor scored, and the Mets walked off. Milwaukee finished 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position. Contreras went 3 for 4 with a walk.

Kyle Harrison allowed one run over five innings for the Brewers. Dustin May (6-8, 4.57) starts Wednesday against Robert Stock (0-2, 5.40). For a Mets team that spent the summer as a punch line, a 10-inning win over the league's best club is the kind of night that keeps September from turning into a total fade. It is not a playoff push. It is a reminder that Lindor still moves the game when the lights stay on.

Elsewhere in the American League, the Rangers dropped an 11-7 decision in Chicago after taking the AL West lead earlier in the week. The National League still runs through Milwaukee. Tuesday just was not their night in Queens.
