Rapoport: Penix a Longshot for Week 2

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said the Atlanta Falcons' initial Michael Penix Jr. target of Week 2 or Week 3 now looks early, calling the quarterback a longshot to start Sunday's home opener against the Carolina Panthers. Rapoport's comments on The Aftermath landed overnight and were amplified by PlayerProfiler and Falcons beat write-ups Wednesday morning.

Penix tore his ACL last November. He was not placed on short-term injured reserve, logged full practices last week, and still sits behind the final mental and physical hurdle with the knee. Atlanta started Cooper Rush in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers with Tua Tagovailoa also unavailable, and that outing went poorly for the offense.

What Rapoport actually said

"It is pretty clear to me that the Falcons would like Michael Penix Jr. to be their starting quarterback when he is healthy, when he is ready, and when he can do it," Rapoport said. "From my understanding the initial timeframe was about Week 2 or 3. It seems at this point that it might be a bit too early for Michael Penix."

That is not an IR stamp. It is a caution flag before Wednesday's practice report. Drake London and Kyle Pitts fantasy managers should plan another week of temporary quarterback play unless Penix suddenly clears every box midweek. Rush survivors from Week 1 already know how thin the margin is if Atlanta rolls the same script again at home.

Atlanta kept the public language tight Monday. Wednesday's participation list and media session are the next real tells.

Sunday stakes at home

Atlanta hosts Carolina at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 20. If Penix remains out, Rush or the next healthy arm keeps the job for one more week. If Penix progresses fast, Friday's designations can still flip. Until then, treat the Rapoport note as the sourced board: Week 2 longshot, not ruled out forever, not on IR.

Context still matters for fantasy and ticket buyers. Penix was a healthy inactive in Week 1 while Rush started, and the ACL clock is around the 10-month mark after last November's tear. Mahomes comparisons floating on social media are noise. The only sourced board for Atlanta is Rapoport's "too early" language plus the Wednesday practice report.

Watch the practice snaps. Watch how freely he throws. And do not lock a Falcons QB until the injury report agrees with the rumor mill.

Ready means ready. Rapoport says that day is not Sunday yet.
